1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Little Saxo killer! Great stuff!

Faults:

Alternator at 126000m.

Head gasket blew at 138000.

Drive-shaft needed replacing.

Driver's window motor failed.

Rattles, plastic trim breaking etc...

General Comments:

To be honest it was a great little car. Didn't cost a lot to buy or run, and could easily see off Saxo VTR's and even keep up with 205 GTi's!

Handling was good, although springs are too soft. Grip was good-back end got a little sideways if you were really pressing (landing you in a ditch!)

Probably driver error!

Very easy to work on, eliminates the need for garages really.

Probably the quickest 1.4 hot hatch after the R5 GT Turbo. Insurance was very cheap.

Driving position odd, but you do get used to it, surprisingly good at long journeys, if not a little noisy!

Very good car-get one, or at least have a go in one you'll be surprised!

1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Affordable pocket fun rocket

Faults:

Drive-shaft.

Nearside wheel bearing.

General Comments:

At first I disliked this car. I found it noisy, uncomfortable and very basic when compared to my 405.

But what can I say, within ten miles I was eating my words. This car is just so much fun! Its steering is light enough to manage and is precise, it goes round corners well, but under-steers with the standard wheels and it goes well in a straight line. The best part is you can be driving quite slowly and feel as if you're flying along at twice the speed. The only downside comes when it comes to stopping, the brakes are poor and without feedback.

I have now had the car lowered and got bigger wheels on and am now truly an AX addict! I love this car, it makes the trips to the shops fun. The 300 mile round trip to university isn't so good as the seats are designed for short journeys, but they grip well when on A and B roads.

It'll beat any Nova type car easily both in a straight line and around a corner, the only car I have been beaten by yet is a Fiesta RS1800i - and even then it struggled to get past!

It's a cheap, reliable, back to basics, but most of all fun car and I wouldn't swap it for the world, at least not until I can afford that Skyline!

1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Don't even go there!

Faults:

Every thing you can think of.

Gearbox fell out.

Electrical problems that lead to only starting when it felt like it (had to be bump started most of the time)

Back Suspension (this made the archers rub so nobody could sit in the back)

Oil leaked.

Radiator leaked.

Head gasket.

Seats broke.

Fuel gauge stopped working.

Side indicator stopped working.

Over heated all the time.

Exhorted fell off (when trying to sell the thing)

And the water washer had been replaced with a hot water bottle (as every AX GT now comes with)

General Comments:

Never ever buy one of these, if you do you will notice a hot water bottle where the washer is meant to be, as nearly every AX GT has one because the washer has fallen off. If you have an original washer then you better invest in a hot water bottle because you will need one.

I don't think your comment is at all a fair description of the AXGT. OK, so yours had problems, doesn't mean every AX has those same problems. And the hot water bottle thing is the first I've heard about it, like I said one cars problems doesn't mean every other car in the range will experience them. Sounds to me you've just brought a neglected one.

No mention of the speed of the car or the excellent handling? A fair and rounded view of the AXGT, I don't think so.

I have to agree with the person above!

I am now on my second AX GT. The first one gave good service for 2 years (it never broke down!!).

I'm now on my way to modding the second GT, which I bought for £50 and is now making a great project car... it's nearly ready for the open road!

It seems to me you were just unlucky, as there are plenty of lemons out there.

I agree with the two comments above, I'm now also on my second AX GT, its 12 months older than my previous one and its in better condition. It sounds as if you have a bit of a dud. If its so bad, why did you buy it?
