1990 Citroen AX Salsa 1.1 unleaded from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A turbo go-kart that falls to bits with age!

Faults:

The main problem I keep on having is that the down pipes keep on cracking and then snapping off just under the manifold. I have had this problem 4 times now and the car is currently off the road with this problem.

The dash lights won't work so I'm going to have it looked at.

The front left hub has recently given in and that has got to be replaced.

I am on my 5th Alternator which is really taking the mick.

I am on my 2nd battery.

I am also having problems with my left front window, it doesn't like to be wound up any more.

The side mirror's levers have both snapped.

And last but not least, the starter motor is on its way out.

General Comments:

The seat's are really comfortable and the interior decorations are fantastic in comparison to most standard designs.

Though the handling is really bad and becomes even worse when there are passengers.

The car as a whole is extremely fast and nippy for a 1.1 liter and shocks most people with its stupidly fast acceleration from a standing start. This really is to be expected for a car with a completely plastic tailgate.

1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A pocket rocket!

Faults:

Electric windows didn't work.

Engine cooling fan fell off.

Exhaust was blowing quite badly.

Leaking water bottle.

General Comments:

This was a great little car.

It could give anything a run for its money off the lights, amazing acceleration for a 1.4 engine.

Nice looking inside and the bucket seats are very comfortable.

It had to have a bit of money spent on it, but nothing major so I can't complain.

The engine was a bit noisy at tick-over, but sounded great as the revs rose.

The only really bad thing is that it wouldn't be much fun on a long motorway journey. To noisy at sustained high speed.

As a budget hot hatch it is brilliant.

1990 Citroen AX GT 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

High performance, low on anything else

Faults:

Where to start?!

Speedometer doesn't work.

Side trim is falling off.

Oil leak.

Worn C.V joint, causing extreme knocking on cornering.

Slow electric windows.

Baggy gear selector.

Headlights faulty.

Worn piston rings.

General lighting problems, fog lamps, interior light, indicators.

Poor fuel consumption.

General Comments:

Despite all it's faults, I love this car so much.

It has no problem on performance, I cannot believe the power this car has.

This is however, the most unsafe and un-economical car I have ever had. I do 20 miles a day, Monday to Friday, and use £45 petrol each week.

I think the AX GT is a great car for an enthusiast, but I will not be keeping mine!

This is crazy! You must have really picked up a rust bucket. I have just bought an immaculate Ax GT and yes the engine needs tuning, the body work was perfect as was the interior, this car flies when its warmed up! I have found that the only reason the petrol consumption is so high is because the engine timing is off. Having this re-tuned means I can now do about 40 mpg. I also do about 20 miles a day, and I love this car it is an absolute beauty of a car to drive.

1990 Citroen AX 10 TRE 1.0 Gasoline from Portugal

Summary:

Comfort at a low price

Faults:

I have this car since 2001, and until now the only problem I have is this: if I try to drive it at night and it's cold, the car has some problems starting up, but after the first kilometer it runs smoothly.

General Comments:

The Citroen AX 10 TRE is a great car, for two simple facts, it's very, very economic and highly comfortable.

My advice to everyone: buy one (maybe it isn't fast, but it's great fun to drive it)

I followed your advise and bought one just to ride on the weekends for fun... and... I ended up using it 7 days a week! it's really fun to drive! who wasn't very happy with that was my wife.. "why did you spent 30000 euros on an Audi A3 to end up drivin' a 500 Euro AX???"

Well 3 years have past since I've posted that comment, and nowadays I don't drive that car anymore... : (it was great fun, but 15 years after the year of purchase it was starting to be more of a problem than a party... I own a saxo 1.1sx now just to feel that I evolved within the brand... :D it's like a new ax, but more reliable and faster ;) nevertheless I recommend everyone to buy an AX just for fun! IT'S AWESOME!
