1991 Citroen AX GT 1.4 twin carb from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Thriller for under a K!

Faults:

How long have I got?

There was a rattle on the front nearside door. I later found out that rattles are what the GT is all about.

The brakes were shocking..... I nearly crashed driving it away from the garage. They needed replacing straight away.... which was NOT cheap! The drums needed doing as well. The grinding noise was traced to a wheel-bearing that was repaired with a second-hand part, which saved me about £160.

The electrics are ALWAYS playing up... but I find that a quirk of the car!

And there are a multitude of niggles and knocks.... rusting around the filler-cap being an annoyance... flimsy doorlocks are another... BUT overall, I love the car. It's the best thing to come out of France since Brigite Bardot.... apart from their football team of the last two years, of course!

General Comments:

The GT is an honest little car. It was designed with weight saving techniques, and that is why the car is as robust as Kate Moss!

But, it's that same reason why the car is a rocket.... I used to have a Pug 205 GTi 1.6, and the AX feels quicker..... although it doesn't handle as well.... but for a skinny-tired little aluminium boneshaker, it goes very, very well indeed!

I am hoping to trade mine in ASAP and get the GT2 or the GTi..... with a lowered, Koni sprung chassis... some fatter, wider rubber..... and a K&N.... and a good exhaust...... and then we'll see if it can corner like the Pug!

Until then, I'll happily make do with booting it into a corner, and holding on till the exit!

Hello, I am a AX owner myself, and 2 thumbs very positively up =), the electrics are "shocking" (sorry about the pun, but I couldn't resist), and you do go round corners on your door.

More than one other person in with you and the wheels slowly grind away at the arches. BUT, I've got a 1.1 TRE, I've had it at 100mph, with 4 other people in it, and a boot full on the way back from Glastonbury, and I am proud to say that I've overtaken a Lamborghini, a Porsche 944, souped up Novas, Pugs and Golfs, and in my year of having it, only 5 cars have overtaken me!!

I'm soon getting a new (2nd hand) car, a Citroen AX GT 1.4 Sportif with quad pipes, K&N, lowered, full body kit, alloys, straight through exhaust system off a mate (we have had it to 135mph =)), so a definite YES in my book.

My other favorate cars include: Renault 5 GT, Pug 205 1.6 GTi, Golf mark 1, AC Cobra, Dodge Viper, Porsche 911 Turbo, and a good trashed Escort.

I'm also planning on doing up an AX GT for rallying, so Saxo's watch out, and watch this space.

I own a 91' AX GT Sportif and there's no way it will do 135mph.... as mine is tweaked... and I can't beat 112mph... check out my review...

Forget Nova's, get an AX GT.

I have owned three AX'S and love them. My first was a GT 500 which clocked up well over 150,000 miles be for I passed it on. I now have two, 1.4 D And a 1.5 D. Both are great cars, They just keep going. The 1.5 D tows a micro caravan which I made for the job. Being a diesel it tows great. For all there little ways I would still recommend it to anyone.

Hi, I own an mk2 AX GTi. it is really quick. My car came straight from japan since in my country, half of the cars are surplus. See my problem is, I live in the Philippines where there isn't any Citroen dealership. Where do I get parts?

My AX is not in such a good condition. My main problem now are the wheel bearings at the back, they're wrecked. I can't get any here! Please help.

1991 Citroen AX 10 E 1.0 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Faster than any other car with the same engine size

Faults:

Damn near the whole braking system, which is crap anyway.

Cam belt.

Battery.

Distributor cap (general wear).

Ignition timing.

And the front bumper has a lovely tendancy to not stay on properly on the right hand side.

General Comments:

Fastest one litre I've ever driven. Will go even faster when I can get a new 1.4 injection engine for it!

DON'T LEAN ON THE BODYWORK!
