2001 Daewoo Lanos S Special Edition 1.4 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

An absolute bargain

Faults:

No problems so far.

General Comments:

The car is great. It looks good and the drive is very smooth. Seats are far more comfortable than my previous car (a Ford Escort). Acceleration is better than I thought it would be for this price range.

The only problem I have encountered was not with the car, but with Daewoo's head office. The head office has a communication problem with its dealers.

Back in July I test drove a Lanos and later went on to order the Special Edition 5 door version.

I asked my dealer about it being a Limited edition, was there any restriction on colour availability. His reply was no, you can choose any colour including metallic or mica finishes, usually a chargeable extra.

I choose Pacific blue in mica finish and the order was supposedly accepted.

Two weeks after I was supposed to have taken delivery, I had not heard from Daewoo. I phoned them to be told that the car had been despatched and that they would look into it and get back to me. Later I received a call saying that the colour was unavailable.

I was given a run down of available colours and so chose again. Again the order was accepted. One week later exactly I got another call to say this colour was unavailable.

I was told only 2 colours were left, I chose what I thought was the better of the 2 and 2 days later I got a call to say the car was ready.

Despite all this I would like to say that the dealer could not have offered a better service, the problem was all down to head office.

The car is a bargain and I would recommend it to anyone.

2001 Daewoo Lanos S 1.6 DOHC from North America

Summary:

A great bargain with good performance, but no after-market support

Faults:

Nothing has broken yet, and the way I drive, that's saying a lot. This car really takes a beating.

General Comments:

I really love this car. It's reasonably quick, gets great gas mileage, and handles wonderfully.

I'm very impressed with the performance and comfort, but I really don't like that the after-market hasn't accepted this car yet. I have been unable to find much at all in the way of go-fast parts, or dress-up parts for this car. It's about the only thing about owning this car that disappoints me. Why should guys with Hondas and Acuras have all the fun? This car would respond really well to some basic tuning.

Regarding aftermarket support, you may wish to look in Google Groups, for alt.autos.daewoo, then look for an entry titled "List of 'alternate' Daewoo parts"

Good luck..

2001 Daewoo Lanos from North America

Summary:

Great car, great price

Faults:

I have had nothing go wrong with this car so far. I found a minor paint defect near the trunk, which the dealer took care of.

General Comments:

I am a larger person. The seat room is very ample, and the seat belts are roomy.

It has a quiet engine and it runs well.

The cup holders are very inconvenient... they block the radio controls, and you cannot expect to hold anything more than a soda can in them.

I have found the drivers side door to be a pain. You have to lock it by key on the outside.

The trunk space is large.

I love the style of the exterior, very classy. For a low budget car, I feel it is a good deal.

I found the driver's side locking mechanism to be a great idea - you never, never have to worry about locking your keys in the car. I am surprised at the fact that a person would buy a car without noticing something like that first!?!

And besides, it's not the only car out there with this feature. Every Honda I've had (an 91 Accord EXR and 93 Civic SI) come with that feature also. Exactly as pointed out before, you'll never forget your keys in the car.

Anybody else have a car with this 'problem'?

Try holding up on the handle while you shut it, that is how my Suzuki Sidekick works. Just guessing on this, never tried it on this particular car.

Only holds a soda can? I have this car and so what... how much soda do you want, "ample person"!?

Perhaps Daewoo is doing you a health service by only allowing the cup holders to hold "nothing more than a soda can"???

As for the car it's great...peppy...sharp looking (had custom rims put on mine). Only problem is the freakin passenger seat keeps reclining on me after a few drives. Oh well.

Leather, CD, AC, Power steering and breaks, power locks, dual air bags, sport package... for $4500.00!? how can any one complain (that's how much I paid for mine)
