1999 Daewoo Matiz from UK and Ireland

Faults:

Only had this car for one year, and have had so many problems with it.

Firstly the screen washer broke.

Then there was an electrical problem.

Next the electric window stopped working.

Now it has started loosing water and looks like the head gasket has blown.

It has cost me nearly 1,000 pounds so far. Love these cars, but they have a very small engine if you do lots of miles in it.

Hi, I bought a Daewoo Matiz 800cc. I just love the car; it's light on fuel and is affordable to maintain. I recommend that anyone purchase a Daewoo Matiz. It's a lovely little car, I call it my Midget, LOL.

Hi, I have a Hyundai Matrix 2004, and it's very inefficient when it comes to gasoline. I'm planning to buy a 2nd hand Daewoo Matiz m100 model. It's a year 2000, released here in the Philippines. Do you think it's worth it to replace my Matrix with a Matiz?

Need some replies ASAP. Thanks.

1999 Daewoo Matiz SE from India

Summary:

The BEST in compact car segment

Faults:

The engine started to behave haggardly and had to be eventually re-built. However, the local mechanic wasn't able to understand the complexity of the engine, so he was the major reason to re-build the engine; otherwise the engine was repairable.

The body of the car is very thin, and dents and scratches can be easily seen even if someone accidentally pushes the car a little forcefully.

The dealership and the after-sales service of the company was probably the worst, which also lead them to bankruptcy.

General Comments:

The car is amongst one of the best ones in compact cars. The car's ride is the smoothest of all (even smoother than the much hyped Hyundai Santro,) and it is perfect even for touring the country-side. The car is very reliable as it has never ditched us during its ride.

The seats and the overall cabin is so comfortable that it is almost an un-tiring ride even if a person is sitting for long hours inside the car. The car is also very smooth and very interesting to drive.

The looks of the car are so sleek and sexy that it could easily compete with a sports car. It was an everyday event that people used to stare at the car when we first purchased it.

Overall, the car is probably the best in its category and could work as both a primary or a second car. This is definitely the best one for ladies as it is both sexy as well as smooth to ride.

1999 Daewoo Matiz SE 0.8 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Remember it's a compact and basic car - but fantastic for what it is and tries to be!!

Faults:

I recently had to replace the alternator (generator) - this was a bit expensive at $400 (aud), as I was told that the OEM unit could not be serviced, & a new complete unit was the only option (I'm still not convinced on this though).

General Comments:

I purchased the car from a friend of a friend, who owned it from new, & apart from maintenance, no major faults or repairs have been required. Given the age the car now - it cannot be faulted.

Overall this is a great little city/second car, but you have to appreciate it for what it is; a 0.8 3cyl - so don't expect neck snapping acceleration, particularly when carry additional passengers.

However the performance with just the driver is pleasantly surprising; you will pull away from lights, and merge with traffic without any hesitation - all this, plus twin air bags and very efficient fuel consumption.

I have to admit I was a bit sceptical at first, particularly with the demise of Daewoo in Australia, but this little car has won its way into my heart to such a point that I can't even think of selling it - although I now have a second car for longer weekend trips.

If this were my only car, I would most likely be disappointed by the ride and power that you so desperately want on long drives.

In summary, if you can find a well maintained example, this little car will prove to be joy to own.
