1998 Dodge Intrepid 2.7 from North America

Summary:

The 98 Doge Intrepid repairs cost more than it is worth

Faults:

My engine threw a rod at 70k and I had to replace it costing $4200.

The driver side window quit working and after having it replaced the auto button now does not work.

Now 1 year later all the windows are in child safety lock mode.

I had to replace the radiator and the new engne only had about 24k on it.

The check engine light goes on and off for no apparent reason.

General Comments:

This car seems to break down every 6 months. Just recently the battery went dead and it was a major ordeal to change it. I had to remove the right wheel and work in a small space to remove it.

1998 Dodge Intrepid from North America

Summary:

I love the car, but hate the engine

Faults:

The grounding circuit board blew and was $380 just to replace the board.

The alternator went out and the dealer alternator was actually less expensive than the aftermarket parts.

General Comments:

Nice car, but has bad engineering on the engine.

Important note to all Intrepid owners.

The oil in these cars gets gummy very quickly and will plug all the vents in the engine.

Ours gummed up and luckily for us it started blowing oil out of the dipstick instead of blowing the engine.

With the oil gumming up quickly, you must put a quart of engine flush in with the oil and run the engine for 3 minutes and let it sit for a few hours before draining out the oil.

Ours was so gummed up we drained out all the oil, filled the engine with a non-compustable solvent and let it sit overnight. The solvent when drained was as thick as syrup. We filled the engine twice more and let it sit. It finally got all the gummy oil out. Now we will put in some engine flush every time we change the oil to take care of the problem and avoid having to replace the engine.

1998 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L from North America

Summary:

I will never buy a car with the 2.7L engine again

Faults:

My starter was replaced.

I had all new brakes and rotors installed.

My AC compressor is shot.

I installed a new alternator.

The O2 sensors have all been replaced, and continue to falter.

The rear brakes have been replaced, and brake drums have been returned.

The water pump has been replaced.

The timing chains have been replaced.

General Comments:

The car, when it's running correctly, is beautiful.

The problem is it's always in the repair shop. The 2.7L engine appears to be one of the worst ever made.

Your car has less mileage than mine and you have that many problems?? You have definitely made my mind up to NOT purchase another dodge intrepid... to think that at one point I thought it was a great car!!! I do not have that many problems, but the little I have is a lot out of my pocket. I hope you love the car you plan to buy or have now!

1998 Dodge Intrepid 2.7L from North America

Summary:

When works, I like it very much!

Faults:

I purchased my Intrepid NEW in 1998 as it looked so cool. I like it even today.

Here is my list of major problems:

1. Complete transmission rebuild @ 35000K and replaced @ 40000K!!! Still not good even today. I can crush it in few km if I want. How? I come from 80Km/h, solid break to 35Km and floor. You will here a crack in the transmission every time till one day...bang. I am driving like a lady now using 100 of the 200HP Chrysler guaranties.

2. Fuel pump replaced @ 30000Km

3. Font brakes and rotors @ 45000Kms and @ 110000Km

4. Tires replaced 25% under warranty and 75% from my pocket @ 50000K

5. Extended Insurance replaced some "steering rods" afterwords ($ 900.00) as new tires gone in less than 30000K

6. OIL pressure gauge replaced

7. Driver's window support clip broken and not functioning from 60000K. Does not work even today extended Insurance does not cover "glass" and dealer cannot replace only clip.
