2000 Dodge Neon from North America

Summary:

Great car at a good price

Faults:

58,000 miles my fuel injection had to be cleaned. My mechanic says that it happens with neons.

60,000 left front axle broke. The car started shaking so I took it to my mechanic. It cost $150 to fix

61,000 My fuel pump started going. The light was coming on and the car would only drive about 10 miles before it would only go 10 miles an hour then die.

These are the only problems that I have had with my car. It just seems like everything happens at once.

General Comments:

I love my Neon. It handles very well in the snow, & we get lots of snow. It also gets great gas mileage. I would recommend a Neon to anyone & would probably buy another one myself.

2000 Dodge Neon Highline Sedan 2.0 Liter SOHC from North America

Summary:

A Bargain Sporty Sedan

Faults:

Most notably, the engine idles very rough.

When cold, the engine knocks for about 30 seconds before warming up.

The plastic headlights accumulate scratches pretty easily, making a scratch repair kit a must.

I bought the car used, and it turned out the upper motor mount was torn. The mounts in the Neon in general are very soft. I threw some mount inserts in there and it's great now.

General Comments:

So far, this car has never given me a problem (except for the ones I created with mods, etc.). Everything still works, nothing electrical or mechanical has gone bad as of yet.

It is sporty in acceleration and handling.

However, the seats aren't bolstered enough for my taste, and it's hard to get comfortable in the cabin if you're a tall person (over 6'1").

The 3-speed automatic really robs the car of power. The car is always either too low or too high in a gear when I accelerate.

It was within my price range.

It has great fuel economy.

Despite any inherent problems such as the "cold knock" and "rough idle", I still love my Neon. =)

The engine knock is SOMETIMES caused by a need for higher octane, instead of using 87 (regular) fuel, use 89 (premium) fuel about 1 - 2 times every 2 weeks.

What you're hearing is not knock. That's the hydraulic lifters before they get fully pumped up with oil. That's a sign that they need changing. Knock is something that you generally hear when the engine is under load and is actually much worse when the engine is warm than when cold. So a cold engine at idle is unlikely to knock.

Tie rods snapped on front wheels.

I really like the car, but the past year it is falling apart.

I have a 2000 Dodge Neon Es.. I bouht it new, however they assured me that it was a great deal for me bc I do a lot of driving... I have had the tie rod's break TWICE! Oil leaks, Transmission problems, the thing is FALLING APART, and it only gets worse!! Definately NOT worth it to fix!!!

2000 Dodge Neon Highline 2.0 SOHC from North America

Summary:

Just dodge it!

Faults:

At about 68,000 miles my transmission blew up, actually that was my fault not chryslers.

Trunk lock likes to stick when I go to open it, probably because I have two 12" subs in the trunk running about 500 continuous watts.

A/c clutch failed at about 70,000 miles.

Two motor mounts failed at about 63,000 miles, top and bottom.

General Comments:

Overall a really reliable car, everything that has gone wrong with this car is my own fault, I'm a motor head with a lead foot.

Fully capable of beating Honda's and v-6 mustangs on the streets.

A sweet alternative for car tuners everywhere.

Perfect for everyday business and putting import freaks on cruise's to shame.
