1999 Ford Mondeo ST200 2.5 V6 24v Duratec from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Seriously fast! Nice looker too

Faults:

Nothing as of yet, although I haven't had the car that long. I guess I'll soon see!

General Comments:

Serious performer on the road. The Duratec growls at you as you push it harder. Looks the part too, all heads seem to turn as you pass people down the street. I have heard talk of plans for a possible ST250 which could be mean, I hope they whack a Turbo on it!

People seem to run Ford a lot down these days when it comes to performance cars but if they stop and look I think they will find there is plenty out there!

I too drive a st200 and it's great until I want it to stop and sure it stops, but not until the car reminds me that it's fitted with ABS, and that's not under hard breaking either, before someone tells me to drive slower. My local dealer tells me I have no problem with the system, but can't explain why Ford fitted the same front disc's and calipers as they fit to the 2ltr on the ST200 and not the larger set as on the ST24.

Summary:

A top spec car for the money!!

Faults:

I had the hesitation problem between 3000 - 3500 revs, Ford sorted this by replacing the spark plugs. I must admit that the hesitation is very faintly there, but it is not that noticable. When having the air-con on the car revs are not very smooth, lots of dead spots appear and it is as if something keeps switching on and off, this apparently is quite common as the air-con kicks in and out on acceleration demand, so I was told??

General Comments:

The acceleration from 0-60 was a little disappointing, the 1.8 and 2.0 litres seem to stay with you until you pass 70mph. For motorways it is a top motor. Huge amount of torque around the 70 - 100mph range, just got to be careful as it creaps over a 100mph very easily! Great under load and up hills. Handling is superb. Braking and traction control system is fantastic. Good looking car with the body kit and cheap on insurance!

My dad has a ST24 and no 1.8 or 2.0 car stays up with him when he floors it, he burns straight past them. There must be a problem with the acceleration on yours, my dad gets to 60 in 7 seconds, then further up rather quick.

Interesting as the Ford's figures suggest that the vehicle gets from 0-60 in 8.0 seconds.

Summary:

Despite poor dealer service, absolute stonker at second hand prices

Faults:

There seems to be a fault with the tuning of the vehicle.

It pinks when accelerating up to about 3500 RPM, and pinks heavilty at 3000RPM.

I have put it into the Ford dealer 3 times. The last time the service reception guy they said they had retarded the ignition, but when I spoke to the workshop manager, he said he did not as it is not possible on this generation of the ST24.

General Comments:

Ford lives up to its poor service reputation.

However, the car is a dream to drive, especially long distances. It's big and comfortable. The only down side is it's a bit juicy.

My mate's Si 24v (same engine) used to pink badly at low revs. An ECU "reset" sorted it.

Try disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes, then reconnect it, and take the car for a 20 minute drive under various loads, speeds and revs. Also let it idle for at least 5 minutes. The ECU will "re-learn" all the settings and set itself up again for optimum running.

May or may not work, but it's free and worth a try.

Hi, I had the same problem, then I read that the V6 duratec shuts down half a bank of valves at 3200 rpm, therefore if you drive it, say down hill in fourth and drive slowly over & under the 3200 rpm level, you can really see the reluctance of the motor to make up its mind in this rev-band.

I had the same pinking problem at 3 - 3.5 k rpm, turned out to be the cable from the controller that opens up the second bank of inlet valves. Ford dealer wanted 180 quid to fix it, I fixed it using a push bike gear cable from halfords, cost - 99p.

My car pinking too, have plugged it in, computer showed two faults. Lack of ho2 switch indicates lean and intake manifold runner control stuck closed. Any suggestions? Has this got anything to do with pinking?
