2002 Ford Ranger XLT King Cab 3.0L from North America

Summary:

I liked it at first, but if I have to put up with pinging, I will not be a very happy customer!

Faults:

The first week I had it the steering quit working, fortunately close to home. I had it towed to the dealership. I had to pay for a rental while they tried to figure out what was wrong. They came up with a air bubble was in the steering fluid?

After 5,000 miles the engine started pinging some times. At 8,000 miles the engine pings all the time. I had a 1996 Ranger that had the same problem which they could never fix and the salesperson told me that the 2002 model 3.0 L 6 Cl did not have the pinging problem.

There is peeling paint around the radio in the dash. It looks like there was some defect in the plastic and it was sprayed over with paint to hide it, only to have it peel.

General Comments:

Overall quality seems good. Maybe I should of moved up to a F-150 instead of buying another Ranger?

It does have better acceleration than the 1996 Ranger, but its still early to see if that changes.

I like the swing out doors for the King Cab area, much better than the 1996 model.

2002 Ford Ranger 2WD 2.3 I4 from North America

Summary:

Fun to drive, cheap to buy, bad to own

Faults:

Fan clutch and belt pulleys went bad. Lots of poor assembly and design issues. Dealers keep making mistakes.

General Comments:

The vehicle has a good feel to drive. The cabin has very little wind noise, however, poor assembly and design causes rattles. Manual transmission is sloppy and hard to shift. This is a vehicle to keep through the warranty and no longer. Ford dealer service seems lacking on courtesy and competence. They repeatedly have tried to replace components that are not defective and missed defective components. Getting something done right the first time is a quality that has been missing at several Ford dealers. Will not go through this again. Bye bye Ford.

2002 Ford Ranger Edge 3.0L from North America

Summary:

A great looking, reliable workhorse

Faults:

Total transmission failure at 8000 km. Had to be hauled to the dealer.

Transmission still jumps from gear to gear sometimes even after the repair. Ford must have transmission problems as my 1993 Ranger did the same.

Belt molding kept falling off on the driver's side door.

General Comments:

Great looks in the Edge package.

Put a fiberglass lid on the bed and a bush grille on the front. I get a lot of complements on the looks of the truck.

The gas consumption is a little high, but it is to be expected for a V6 engine.

Ford still has not learned that "service" is part of the purchase. Every dealer I seem to go to either tries to rip me off or does not do the repair properly. My I suggest that Ford goes to a Toyota dealership one day and take some notes on service.

I had a 1993 Ranger and got almost 300000 km out of it.

Update - The truck has now had another complete transmission failure. This time Ford must have had too many and changed the material of some part in the transmission. they refused to replace the transmission and insisted that the transmission was OK. I will be ready to fight when the transmission fails again!!

My 96 Ranger also had transmission problem at 48,000km; had to be rebuilt.

Wipers came on by themselves at 50,000km. Covered by the warranty.

Idle fluctuated at 53,000km. Cost $200.00 to fix.

72,000km, and all's well so far.

2002 Ford Ranger Edge V6 3.0 from North America

Summary:

Very nice and a great buy

Faults:

To begin, I love Ford vehicles, but I will continue with this, At this point, I have had my brakes changed two times, the second time I had to pay 450 dollars to get them fixed, The first time was around 8,000 miles and this time it was at 21000 miles, I never had brakes lasted only 8-10,000 miles. The dealership I brought the truck to was terrible, they tried everything to get out of the work, after the first brake change they tried to charge me another 400 to do the work, of course I complained and they did the work under warranty and gave me a free oil change, to this day I will never, ever take my truck to this dealership again. If I get the same type of service again at another dealer I will never buy a Ford vehicle again. To comment on the above, I have taken my truck in for other issuse also, Bad alternator, balancing of tires, alignement, and the clattering noise under the body that everyone always complains about, every time I was hassled at this dealer, (Will not mention any names).

General Comments:

The truck itself is very nice and roomy. The truck handles very well and is very quick in acceleration. Truck comes with great rims, good tires, and a sturdy suspension. Can't comment on the audio system it was the first thing to come out of the truck, I have installed 2 12" subs and a 700WATT amp, and a pioneer deck, sounds awesome. I think this truck is a great buy.

Sir: I would reconsider loving this truck. Brakes that don't last 50,000 miles mean very bad driver or bad truck. Alternator problems, etc, too? Hmmm. I am skeptical of this truck's quality. I appreciate your honesty about it. john.
