1997 Honda Accord LX from North America

Summary:

Still love my car!

Faults:

I've noticed a lot of Honda's between the years of 1995 - 1997 have paint problems. For example, the paint is coming off and the car looks horrible and old. Is this an issue with the dealer? Does anyone know of any callbacks on this matter?

Also, where and what kind of freon can I put in my 97 Accord? At night the air works perfect, but during the day, it's just blowing hot air.

Good thing I had a 1994 Accord. It was very different from the 95-97 Accords. I had 258,000 miles on it before I sold it and it looked great, but had a little rust by the rear wheel wells.

My 1997 Accord has the Mystic Blue Pearl paint job and still looks great. So bad paint job? I am wondering what you mean?

1997 Honda Accord EX-R 2.2L SOHC VTEC from North America

Summary:

Solid and reliable

Faults:

All age-related stuff:

I have replaced:

-Muffler

-Rad

-Fuel lines

-Brake lines

-Tune up parts: wires, plugs, cap and rotor

-Tires.

The A/C doesn't turn on, so either it's out of freon or the compressor's gone. Haven't bothered to fix it.

General Comments:

I bought this car in early '06 as a second car. It's a five-speed EX-R, which is pretty hard to find. Quite fast and solid for a ten-year-old car. No rust and the interior is mint! I often get asked what year it is, since it still looks new.

In the year I have owned this car, I have put about $1500 in new parts in it, but I expected this simply because the car is old and has quite a few miles on it. I'm confident that there is quite a bit of life left in it, because it still runs very well, starts up without a fuss every day, and has never left me stranded.

I would highly recommend this car as a used car purchase, but make sure to have it thoroughly inspected by a trusted mechanic before buying one. I encountered one before I bought mine that had serious problems even though the dealer claimed it was fine.

1997 Honda Accord i 1.8 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Well equipped with a Good image and so far reliable

Faults:

Brakes squeal and the Air con does not work. Previous owner was the cause of the stone chipped front end and the white paintwork only looks good when polished. Engine a bit tapperty when cold and it takes a couples of turns on the crank to start in the morning. Expected more power from Honda engine and it uses more petrol than my Caviller even with a light foot.

General Comments:

Quite well equipped, even for the base model. Rides quite smoothly and handles well with a very responsive turn in, but it takes some getting use to when parking as its hard to see the corners (the previous owner had fitted parking sensors). Looks quite sporty with a factory spoiler on the boot. Interior wears very well with no tears in the seats. A clip has broken off the rear bumper (parking no doubt) and there is lots of scuff marks on the bumpers. There is a mud trap between the bumper and the rear wing and I've seen older Accords with the Rover 600 rust issues at this spot. Haynes don't do a manual for this model.

Think I'll go for the 2.0 next time though.

Waiting to see if the Honda reliability is true.

1997 Honda Accord SE 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

A little beat up, but a bargain by far

Faults:

Nothing yet. It needs tires (normal) and possibly brakes.

Car has to be started in N, won't turn over in D. Why I don't know.

General Comments:

This my girlfriends car. We got her red accord coupe at a junk yard for $3200, its perfectly good mechanically. It has a dent on the side and the rear bumpers kinda pushed in so the you gotta slam the trunk for it to close. The inside is a little beat up, but not horrible, we cleaned it out real good and the stale smoke smell is gone.

It has a salvaged title that's why it was so cheap. For what it is she got a steal.

We got it to replace her 96 Civic which had over 150K on it and was starting to develop problems.

She got a steal for 3200$. I recently paid $6,000 for my 95 Accord EX.

I'm not an expert mechanic, but as far as I know, most cars aren't allowed to "turn over" while the gear shift is in R-D-3-2-1 or L only P and N. That's "park" and "neutral". It's a safety thing for automatic transmissions. As for manual transmissions, most newer vehicles have you push the clutch in.

The above commenter is right, the car will not start in any gear except for Park and Neutral. This is a safety feature to prevent the car from lurching forward upon starting. All cars equipped with an automatic transmission come with this (except classic cars. Most cars from the mid-80's on had this feature).
