1999 Honda Accord LS 2.0 from UK and Ireland

Summary:

The perfect family car

Faults:

Rear suspension links at 77000

Air conditioning compressor at 80000.

General Comments:

My Dad purchased the car in 2001 with 12000 miles showing. It has always been serviced by Honda and more recently by a local trusted independant garage.

Up until recently apart from routine service parts nothing has broken or failed to work.

It has been totally reliable and never let us down

A great comfortable long distance cruiser.

A smooth automatic transmission.

A firm ride in town, but more suited to motorway driving.

Equipped with air con, electric windows, mirrors and sunroof, cruise control,4 airbags, deadlocks and alarm/immobiliser and remote locking.

Tyres last 25000 miles

Brakes last 35000 miles

Brake discs last 70000 miles

Parts are expensive and often available as main dealer only option-new air con compressor from Honda is £700+vat+fitting = £1000

Low mileage unit sourced for £125+vat

Goes like a rocket when the variable valve timing kicks in (vtec)

Averages 30mpg so fuel bills are higher than other cars in the class.

Group 10 insurance which is reasonable for a 148 BHP car.

Just an update to this review.

27/11/06.

Had problems with the drive-belt and power-steering belt slipping when starting the car from cold, with the heated rear window or air conditioning on (83000 miles)

Finally tracked down to a worn crankshaft pulley which has been replaced and all is quiet (£96)

MIL lamp on dash lit up (86000 miles)

Traced to the main exhaust gas sensor which was replaced (£230 just for the part!)

Otherwise still going well.

1999 Honda Accord LX-A from North America

Summary:

Honda Accord, no other is close to it in this category

Faults:

Problem faced in 8 years -

-Flat tires 4 times

-Tire replacement 1 time (Michelin is the best)

-Brake replacement 2 times

-Roter replacement 1 time.

That's it! That's all I paid extra other than regular servicing.

General Comments:

Best car to have. Owned and driven for 8 years and still runs and looks like brand new car (whenever I wash it!). I very much rely on it especially during long drive, nighttime driving in all weather conditions. Infact, while rush driving, I felt it more reliable than camry.

May be the timely maintenance and service is the key.

1999 Honda Accord LX Sedan 2.3 VTEC from North America

Summary:

Better than most

Faults:

My axel bearing seals went bad at 96000.

At 101,000 miles (now) my check engine light is on indicating a catalytic converter problem. my gas mileage had dropped from 28-29 to 22-23 suddenly.

General Comments:

I love this car even though the axel bearing seals went bad. It was a HUGE stroke of luck for me that they went bad right before the 100,000 mile warranty expired because Honda replaced the transmission!for no cost. I only knew something was wrong when I went under to do an oil change and there was a visible transmission fluid leak. Therefore I highly reccomend that people check their transmission fluid level frequently because this could happen to you and if it is not covered under warranty it will obviously be an expensive repair.

Now my check engine light is on and an auto parts store read the code for me and said it is a catalytic converter problem. I certainly don't have the money to fix it so I will have to see what happens.

Sometimes the car shakes violently when I brake hard, say from 80 to zero in the space of a long exit ramp.

But all in all it has been an awesome car.

1999 Honda Accord Coupe 3.0 vtec from Switzerland

Faults:

Not much.

Battery died (normal after 5 years). Only the type of batteries required for this car are expensive.

Very faint squeaky noise coming from the glove box.

That's a known issue one on this car.

Rattling noise when using A/C. Only perceivable when engine is idling. Technician told me it is within the parameters. If it becomes worse they would have to replace pulley and the belt.

Wear on the drivers seat.

General Comments:

Besides above this car rocks. Fun and save to drive also on longer journeys. The car always behaves predictable and goes were you tell him to go. Even on wet roads. A real comfortable sports coupe. However I lowered the car a little to improve its look and get a firmer suspension.

The V6 engine does an excellent job. Silent at low and roaring at higher rev's. Like a V-TEC engine should do. Consumption on highways is around 10l/100km and in the city between 13-15l/100km and more, but that really depends on the driver of course.

Odd gear shifting when accelerating using the Tempomat.

A manual transmission or at least an semi-automatic would fit this car perfectly.

Quality and finish are on a very good to high level. It keeps up with higher priced models from BMW and Jaguar and gets really close to these.

Women love this car. It's a real head turner and a boyfriend/husband upsetter.

It's so much fun to drive. I really love it and would prefer to keep it.
