"Piece of junk!!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

A couple of weeks after purchasing the car everything started to go wrong. In the last year I have had to change my brakes three times (and still have problems),alternator, shocks, gaskets, belts, ignition, all of my tail lights, fuel pump, A/C system, and have had multiple transmittion problems. It also has noises coming from all over. The only reason I got rid of my dodge stratus was because I wreaked it and I knew the person who owned the civic before me. They said it was a realiable car. Not!!!

General comments?

This car has left me on the side of the road 4 times and have spent thousands of dollars on it. It now has 80,000 miles on it a burns a quart of oil a week. The engine starts when it wants and dies while going down the road. I have brought it to the dealer may times and they tell me nothing is wrong. Honda cars are very poorly built. I should have stayed American!!

I know exactly what's wrong with it and the only way you will know is to take it to a Honda specialist... You have to replace the relay when that goes bad it starts and then five minutes later it will stop on you. If you take it to a dealer they will not know because it still runs when you take it ther e. I had the same problem and I bet others have the same thing and it is a shame because people don't know that and I guess it makes it to the junk yard, but it is the relay switch and if you get a magnifier you will see on the sodder that has a micro crack and that will prevent you are car from running properly, but I have about 375,000 miles with the same engine and replace the tranny at 200,000 miles and never replace the starter... It is one of the best car I ever bought... The civic leaks, but took care of that and only cost me a total of $45 bucks by replacing the gromet and seals...

Listen you don't know anything about Hondas. The only reason why you had all of those problems is because the dealer wants you to spend all of your money. So go to a diffrent dealer!

"I should have stayed American!!"

Did you defect to another country or something?

Obviously you bought a Civic that was really abused, regular maintenance was not done and someone made a quick buck on you. This is life when buying a used car, even if it's from a "friend"

Aren't the Civics on sale in America actually made in America?

Because you have factories there I know that.

I have an "89" Civic DX Hatch. Automatic, Air Conditioning, Power Steering, and Power Brakes. Purchased with Original 54,000 miles 2 years ago. Ran Car-fax on the vehicle before I bought it, plus received complete service history from the second owner. He sold because he needed a truck. He worked for the dealership. Bought the car from some old lady who hardly ever drove it. I just had to replace the starter, and O2 Sensor. Total bill $650 local Honda Dealership. What nobody seems to mention about these Model Year Honda's, (88-91) is that they have an erratic idle. Epecially with the air on. Real pain in the ass. Not constant, but it's there. The mechanic who replaced my starter, and O2 Sensor though it might be a bad ground. He did manage to make it better, but not perfect, and he wanted to continue to work on it, but I would have had to leave it with him another day, and I could not. I must say this has been a great little car all, and all. No leaks except the usual head gasket seepage. I leak no fluids, except such a tiny bit of coolant, it's not even noticeable. Only if people new about the resodering of the relay switch, and how simple it is, they would save themselves a lot of grief. The person that sold me the vehicle explained it to me, and also gave me a brand new relay switch with the car. In the 2 Years I have had it I replaced the IAC Valve, and the Main Fuel Injector. The Injector was showing no voltage, so I had it replaced including the part for $100. The IAC was expensive at $237, but it is easy to replace. It turns out that it did not need it, but I was trying to resolve the idle issue. I have had the front brakes replaced including the pads for $100. At just under 86,000 I still have not replaced the rear brakes. The brakes suck on this car, and so does the suspension. Don't believe all this BS about replacing CV Boots. You will have to, but not as soon as I have read, and for the nonsense price that I have read. Another problem is the dash makes a noise in cold weather. I am guessing it is not insulated, and freezes. Dumb on Honda's part. The colder it is, the louder it is. Anybody have any idea on the idle? And the Dash noise? Email nightview68@yahoo.com. I still think mainly because of gas mileage this car is a winner. -Mark-
