1998 Jeep Cherokee Limited 4.0 from North America

Summary:

Escape from city life in this!

Faults:

Funky tail lights; there seems to a short in the tail lights, so only the passenger sides work.

PVC valve was causing about 14-18 mpg; I replaced it and now it's getting 20 mpg.

Also gas gauge acts up whenever I get the undercarriage wet.

Dash lights have acted up twice, but again after getting the undercarriage wet from going through creeks.

General Comments:

It has some quirks, but overall a great SUV.

Very comfy ride, and will go anywhere you want it to go. Just when I thought I was going to be stuck or stranded because of some bad areas I ventured into, I have always gotten out of it, and made it look easy in the process.

Although I admit for its weight and its engine size, it's not good on gas, but for what I use it for, I can't complain too much.

1998 Jeep Cherokee 4X4 Sport 4.0 inline 6 from North America

Summary:

Best all around SUV ever!!!

Faults:

Rear cargo latch will not open.

Driver door latch snapped off.

General Comments:

This vehicle has been nothing but reliable.

The engine is without a doubt the best around, and the Cherokee makes the Liberty look like a little scared kid in a playground.

My best friend recently purchased a new Liberty and he couldn't stop bragging, because on paper the 3.7L V6 has more torque and horsepower than the Cherokee, but made him take a double take as I blew by him and watched him in my rear view mirror. Not to mention the ground clearance comparison.

The Liberty is nothing more than Jeep's version of the Honda CRV. I hate when people say the Liberty is a remodelled Cherokee. The truth is they stopped making the true Jeeps and concentrated on cars with 4 wheel drive.

Cherokee's rule!!!

1998 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 from North America

Summary:

No way you can go wrong with a JEEP

Faults:

My Jeep has been rolled wheels to wheels & then rebuilt by a business that didn't know what they were doing. I have a bit of a problem with overheating, but not bad. My first Jeep I put 200,000 on it & gave it to my son & he drove it till he sold it & the engine blew 6 weeks later. He can't wait till I give him my 1998.

General Comments:

I plan on getting 200,000+ out of it. I will never be without a Jeep, you can't beat them. Drive them till the doors and wheels fall off & get new ones & keep going. The engine has never missed a lick & it has taken me every where I have wanted to go & I mean every where. People that have rode in my Jeep can't believe the places I have taken them even off road. It is a blast to drive, it will go any where.

1998 Jeep Cherokee Rubicon 4.0 litre from Netherlands

Summary:

Great!

Faults:

The ABS-system was tuned-up after a recall of Daimler-Chrysler: it was fixed under warranty of the manufacturer.

The battery is replaced at 75,000 miles. At approx. the same time the ring of the after part of the exhaust broke: replacing was costly, due to rust. The airconditioning compressor broke down at 100,000 miles; at that fix the complete system was fitted up and also filled with new R134A. At 115,000 miles the -original!- front discs were replaced. Not bad at all for a car of nearly 6 years of age!

General Comments:

The Cherokee is handsome on it self and is handy too. Not to big and it has space enough for a family. It pleases as a towing-vehicle as well. In quite heavy terrain it performs well. At all: a great car with 'the right looks'.

1998 Jeep Cherokee Sport 4.0L from North America

Summary:

Buy it and you will not regret it!!

Faults:

Not much has gone wrong with this SUV. I have replaced the brakes 3 times in 106,000 miles of ownership. The original shocks where rusted and created a very hard ride, replaced them myself with rancho's. I drive on very salty roads and the rust has been very minimal. replaced the alternator at 156,000 did the serpentine belt at 172,000 replaced all hoses at 189,000 they were not leaking, but they were the originals and looked well worn.

General Comments:

I love this car. It's my first, and even with 212,000 miles it shows no signs of stopping. The 4.0L with the AW4 transmission is an indestructible combination. The transmission shifts very smooth, never had any problems with it. The acceleration is still great and can blow many cars away at stop lights. I tow a 4,000 Lb boat frequently and it tows like a mule!!! I also take it off road and it does great, never got it stuck. I love this jeep and am buying another Cherokee when this one is done.
