My GS had some minor suspension problems after hitting a mild bump in the road at about 35000 miles. No big deal even though I had gone through much worse in my old 88 Trans Am.
My most recent problem is that my engine threw a rod and the car only has 45,000 miles. I suspected that I would be backed by the 60,000 warranty, but I got shafted on that one. Now the car is sitting at at my mechanic's because I can't pay the car note, insurance, and a $5000 bill for a new engine.
Thanks Mitsubishi!!!
Well... considering you have a GS model... Mitsubishi didn't build the motor. You have a 420a Chrysler engine. Thank them for that.. not Mitsu. My eclipse is a 97 GS with 105,000 miles on it (manual tranny), and it still runs great. Just bad luck I guess.
The 420a is generally a pretty strong engine, weird that you had such bad luck. Usually the only problem encountered with the 420a is a bad head gasket.
The head gasket is an ongoing and expensive problem with the 420A. I'm currently hunting a replacement engine for my 97 Eclipse GS since my crank is jacked and warped beyond recovery.
Outside of this problem, it's been a ton of fun driving it (even though it's been over a year since I last ran the car).
I own a 97 mitsubishi gs eclipse and right now it's in the shop getting the worthless 420A torn out and cutting the front end off and going turbo with a real engine GS-T the 420A may be reliable engine for a grandma or slow driver, but for a street racer it's slow and junk!
The 420A has a strong block. you have to tear out your motor and build it up to take what you give it. mine has 440hp the only thing stock in the motor is the crank and the cams.
Listen, you need to understand that a 420a engine is only in a rs eclipse. The engine in your gs would be the 4g63. Now the difference is a 420a is a Chrysler engine, it's mounted in the opposite direction then the 420a. A 420a engine is in the rs eclipse. If it's a replacement you're looking for it will be around $1,000 for the engine itself.
OK as for the previous comment, this person obviously doesn't know to much about eclipses. If they did they would know the gs and rs both have 420a. How do I know you ask well I had the unfortunate pleasure of owning one of those POS motors. the 420a can't handle any sort of power my best advice speaking from experience and 20K bucks is fix the car get what you can and run run far far away. I had to put 3 motors and 3 trannys in that car. Get what money the next sucker will give you and run. Buy a gst or gsx that's my next one bought a commuter for now and stepping up to a gsx next, but anyone that says the rs only has the 420a knows nothing about eclipse secondly just get rid of the car I love mitsubishi till the end, but the dodge chrysler motor sucks. Get a real 4g63. As for the guy who previously responded about the rs being the only 420a don't respond to things you obviously have no clue what your talking about you will not find one not one gs out there stock that has a 4g63 in it int he 2gen so don't talk until you get a clue.
I just got a 1995 Eclipse GS and I need a 420a engine. Can somebody help me find a website to buy from?
I would be very grateful.
Thanks.
