1995 Pontiac Grand Am SE 2.3 from North America

Summary:

Only got 70800 miles out of it, but loved it

Faults:

Water pump replaced.

Thermostat replaced.

Coolant inlet line replaced.

Radiator replaced, full of build-up.

Heater core flushed, full of build-up.

Head gasket replaced.

Engine block cracked. Needs replacement.

General Comments:

I loved this car to death. It still is in showroom condition and has had regular maintenance. The engine started showing signs of wear around 60K miles by running low on oil between changes. One night it overheated, got towed to dealership, and three weeks of problems ensued until cracked block diagnosed.

That's really not that bad, once those repairs are done you will love it even more.

1995 Pontiac Grand Am GT 3.1 SFI from North America

Summary:

Performance and reliability bargain

Faults:

The exhaust gas recirculation passages clog up with carbon causing a "check engine" light. The dealer then removes intake and cleans carbon out. This has happened three times the past 80,000 miles.

Front brakes tend to wear quickly and warp rotors at the same time.

Power steering has whined for the past five years. Fluid fine just a noisy pump.

Replaced water pump at 55,000 miles and alternator at 85,000 miles.

Engine has developed a faint ticking sound from the hydraulic valve lifters the past 20,000 miles.

Factory CD player quit working after three years, replaced with a Pioneer.

General Comments:

The car has been dead reliable. Has never left me stranded in nine years.

Always starts even in sub-zero weather.

Excellent gas mileage, easily over 30 mpg on highway.

Engine is still very strong and transmission shifts quickly and smoothly.

Will cruise comfortably at 85 miles per hour, more than that it seems strained.

The car has never required oil between changes, still on the full mark when changed.

Considering age and mileage, paint and interior or excellent condition. This vehicle has been through nine snowy and cold winters.

Still an excellent vehicle, I kept it after I purchased by 2001 Grand Am GT. I still love the car.

General Comments:

This is the worst car I have ever had or heard of.

I will never buy Pontiac again.

Like someone said on another review support your local mechanic.

The only positives are the look and the engine is good (if only they'd have built a good car around it)

I paid 5000 for it in 2000 and have put over 6000 into it. I should have gotten more for $11000.

1995 Pontiac Grand Am SE V6 from North America

Summary:

A great little car to get around in.

Faults:

When I first got the car, even before I got it home, the check engine light came on. It turns out that I needed an exhaust gas recirculation valve that cost me $500 for parts and labor.

About a month after that I needed to get a tune up at the cost of another $500 for parts and labor.

Two months after that I had to get both rotors and both drums replaced to the tune of $600 for yet again, parts and labor.

I have had the alternator and tensioner replaced and had a brand new set of tires put on last year.

July of 2003, I began having problems with the transmission, but nothing so serious that I can't drive it.

General Comments:

Despite all the repair work, my car has been wonderful. I love it.

I could have done more research before I bought it and should have taken it to a mechanic to have it checked out, but all in all I am glad that I got it.

I don't like that the controls for the windows are on the middle console and the passenger side window doesn't work, but it could be much worse.
