There were many problems with this car.
I went threw three alternators.
The water pump sprung a leak.
I had to get two new radiators.
The car constantly overheated and yet no shop or even the dealer could fix the problem. It seemed to be a mystery to why it was overheating. The car was constanly in the shop and leaving me on the side of the road. I also had to rebuild the transmission at 70,000 miles. The brakes on this car were also horrible. It seemed like I replaced the pads almost every month.
I treated this car very good and never abused it. This is a good car to stay away from. My girlfriend has a 97 which also had major problems and my friend had a 95 like mine and he got rid of his for the same reasons.
I have same problem with overheating with 95 grand am and mechanics are puzzled. Did you ever find out what was reason for overheating? If so please tell me pdaddy1063@aol.com. Any help would be appreciated.
Are you using dex cool or standard antifreeze, I had my 95 grand am worked on and they use standard coolant and it started overheating all the time and I had them put the dex cool back in and it never overheated again. the mechanic said he doesn't like dex cool, but really it doesn't matter his preference , but what the car should have. so see if that could be the problem, the coolant should be pink, not green.
Has anybody tried replacing the thermostat.
