1999 Renault Megane Coupe Alize 1.4 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A great car with good performance and build quality

Faults:

Sometimes first and second gear do not like to engage.

After 5,000 miles the brake pedal juddered when braking. Took the car to the Renault dealership. They said that due to very hard braking the discs have gone blue and would need replacing (Cost - 300ukp). Not happy with this of course so it took to Kwik Fit who confirmed the brakes were in A1 condition and the pads were only half worn. Didn't mention anything to the dealership until after it had come out of its first service @ 12,000 miles. Oh, and guess what, they didn't mention one thing about the brakes and confirmed the car is fine. Obviously mentioned about this past incident and the girl went very silent and kind of apologised under her breath. Just always make sure you get a second opinion on any expensive work required!!

General Comments:

A fantastic looking car and good fun to drive.

I would definitely advise anyone to buy one, but of course ship it in from abroad for about 30% discount. It'll be worth the wait!

Not the most ideal for tall people, but I'm six foot and fit OK, but any taller and you may find it a problem.

1999 Renault Megane Coupe 1.6 16v from UK and Ireland

Faults:

It failed to start first time on a number of occasions, and is proving to be very unreliable.

General Comments:

It is very unreliable when attempting to start.

Sometimes it will and sometimes it won't.

Renault have had the car and cannot find anything wrong with it (but still bill me £50 for 40 minutes work!). Sometimes the problems will not reoccur for weeks, then it will not start on the first or tenth time for days.

The Automobile Association recovery man advised that it was the engine immobiliser, Renault say their machine say it is not!

Who is right?

Did you ever find the solution to this problem? We have the exact same experience with a megane cabriolet. The garage cannot find anything wrong with the car because it always starts when they have it.

I have had similar problems. Went to work in UK for 7 days and returned to a cold start... would not start until several tries. not a battery problem. Was advised the problem may be moisture getting into the plugs, given all the rain we get here in Ireland. I have yet to prove this. It will start from day to day though if I leave it for a number of days I will have the same trouble...

1999 Renault Megane Coupe Sport Alize 1.6 16v from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Fun and nimble car with entertaining performance

Faults:

Misfire caused by faulty injectors at 2000 miles and again at 6000 miles, but fixed quickly under warranty and has been fine since. Dealer very helpful and arranged for a loan car without notice.

Alarm going off without cause at 12000 miles, caused by a faulty supply lead, fixed by the dealer for free.

General Comments:

An excellent car that can be forgiven the initial problems. Brilliant!!

I would recommend this car to anybody looking for a fun affordable coupe with excellent handling and performance without the high running costs.

It is a little small in the back, so if space is important then buy the 5-door.

Even more of bargain now that the UK prices have been dropped by approximately £2000.

1999 Renault Megane RXE Break 1.4 16v 70kw from Czech Republic

Summary:

Big family car with a lot of fun for good price, and with low running costs

Faults:

I have this car nearly for one year, guarantee has expired before 3 months - I have two small problems in last year:

Oil was disappearing out of the oil van - only a little bit.

Some noise coming from the rear left window - problem with a rubber part.

In Renault service they repaired these two problems very quickly in guarantee - so no problem, they have also replaced the battery - they told me it was from some bad series or something.

General Comments:

I like this car - it is only a 1.4 liter engine, but with nearly 100 HP it is doing with such a big car amazing things. My personal record is 220 km/h. So you can drive very fast if you want or need, but on other side, running costs are very low.

In the city (Prague) it consumes about 7.5-8.5 l/100km, on the motorway if you are going about 150km/h about 7l, and on roads outside the city about 5.5-6.5 l/100km.

This estate has useful volume of 1.6m3 - the largest in the segment.

This car is really comfortable and brings lot of features as standard in this class - for example 4 airbags, ABS, full electric windows, locks, mirrors... for very good price.
