I am from the Seychelles and own a 1.6 VVT Megane II saloon for the past 17 months. To date I have had all the faults mentioned.

The steering clunk and the front brake squeal have not yet been fixed by the local dealer although they have had several go at it.

I will appreciate if somebody can point me to a solution that they've encountered. e.g. Is there a replacement part for the brakes? What was the solution for the steering wheel clunk?

In general my car's performance has been very good.

2003 Renault Megane Sport Hatch 1.6 petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Faulty from the start

Faults:

Hands free central locking faulty on delivery.

Rattles from dash, roof lining, and mirror surround.

Intermittent loss of power for few minutes after cold start.

Noisy brakes 5000 miles.

Faulty gearbox replaced 12000 miles.

Injector coils replaced 20000 miles.

Airbag warning and service lights on constantly 24000 miles.

Wheel bearing replaced 25000 miles.

General Comments:

Hands free central locking was an added option which when working properly is very good. The car was delivered with this option faulty. I was promised it would be fixed Quickly and easily as soon as parts came in. 5 visits later still not working properly, worked for drivers door, but not for passengers, was informed "That's the way it is supposed to work". No it's not! Dealer got in contact with Renault France. Car returned from sixth visit repaired properly.

Constant rattles from dash area. Left in to be repaired returned with rattle still there plus a new one in door, asked why they had touched the door was told they couldn't find the rattle so had added padding were they thought it might be. Went for drive as passenger located rattle in rear view mirror surround returned car told them were the rattle was, returned repaired properly.

Overall this car has had 19 visits to the dealership for repairs.

Asked to get car replaced as faulty was given £250 in service vouchers.

Seeked legal advise was told Renault would drag it through courts, would take months and if I lost would cost thousands in legal fees. Was advised to sell the car and cut my losses.

2003 Renault Megane RXT 1.6 petrol from Germany

Summary:

Great balance between performance and economy

Faults:

Battery replaced after 6 months.

One rear lamp burned.

General Comments:

The good things:

The engine is very quiet and smooth. In calm driving I never exceed 2500 rpm, and the auto-transmission loves to keep in high gear (sometimes it's a bit annoying).

The ride is very comfortable.

Lots of gadgets, great on board computer.

Average fuel consumption is good (8.5 liters for 100 km.).

The bad things:

The plastics on the dashboard began to squeak after a minor side accident I had.

The automatic gear-box is perfect if you are a formula 1 racer or a pregnant woman. For anything between it's a disaster.

Have just bought a two year old Megane, from purchase, the injection failed needed new valves. Had to have an new battery as existing one faulty, broke down had to be towed away. On board computer flashes service light randomly and says electrical fault am at my wits end!

I purchased a Renault Megane 52, last February / March with only 13,000 on the clock.

I spent days looking for my Dynamique. Since having the vehicle, the air bag light was faulty, The steering lock came on whilst I was driving it with my children in the back! That was very scary! (The ‘chip’ needed replacing).

The vehicle will not start even when you have your foot on the brake or clutch. This has happened 3 times now, and each time they have said there is nothing wrong with it and gave me a new key card! It left me stranded at 1am in the morning! When I told the garage, they looked at me in disbelief. It is now November, and my warranty only has 2 months left to go. So since I have been the owner of this popular ‘shake your ass’ car, it has been in the garage car 5 times in the last 7/8 months. I will never buy another Renault again. I would be better off with my husband's 10 year old car; at least it will get me to work!

I bought a second hand car privately. Megane 03 DCI model. 65,000 miles on the clock.

Injection system and pump replaced at 18,000 under warranty, and now it has gone again. Fighting with Renault to try and get them to pay. They tried to tell me that I had put petrol in, and then said it was dirty diesel. Second opinion soon proved them wrong.

Will never buy another one, and will find it hard to trade this in, as garages will not touch them.

Injectors in the model are far too sensitive, and go often at a cost of about 400 each.

Be warned about this model. Well known for faults within the trade.
