1997 Saturn SC SC2 1.9 DOHC from North America

Summary:

Reliable and Fun

Faults:

Valve cover gasket started leaking.

Interior panels are cheap and have started to make noise.

General Comments:

In general I have been impressed at how well my SC2 has held up. the car is sporty looking and fun to drive. I will admit I have beat on this car quite a bit since I bought it. I even took it to the drag strip and beat a mustang v6. but for as much as I beat on the car it just seems to run. the only problems I have had have been minor and easily repaired by myself. the biggest complaint I have with Saturn is the cheap interior materials they used. this past year the door panels and dash have started vibrating and make noise at certain speeds. This may be part my fault for installing a loud sub-woofer in my trunk.

I get 32-35 MPG consistently. I did have a problem with the manual tranny when one of the shifting linkage came off the transmission. this happened because a locking washer fell off. So I was stuck in 4th gear on a highway. I had to pull over and put hook the linkage back up. I bought a lock washer and its as good as new. If you make sure to maintain your Saturn and change oil regularly it'll last a long time. For the money I have spent on this car it is a very good deal. I also love the good gas mileage.

1997 Saturn SC -1 from North America

Summary:

I love my car

General Comments:

I love my car. I am in the process of buying a new used car and I am heartbroken that I have to get rid of my coupe. The only major problem I've had with my car is the starter went 6 months ago on my ten year old car so I didn't mind. I hate driving people around so the size suited me. Now, I have a niece and need a car I can tote her around in. That is the only reason I'm getting rid of my Sc-1 Coupe. I am looking at purchasing another Saturn because I found reliability in my car and I love that it's dent proof :)

1997 Saturn SC sc2 4 cylinder. from North America

Summary:

Good car for people on a tight budgets

Faults:

Leather seats are toast. Engine light goes on at random. Water accumulating in the trunk and it's not from the trunk lid seal, had to remove the spare from its compartment cause once frozen what do you do in an emergency?. Was running on four cylinders for a while as nobody including mechanics and DEALER had a clue as to what the problem was, mind you they didn't know it was running on 3 cylinders. Turns out there was massive corrosion on one of the plugs so I changed them for some high quality ones with new wires and voila! back to a 4 banger no thanks to the saturn gurus. Put in a new exhaust, but hey, after 190K what do you expect. This is my beater car with 10 years on it and the exhaust on my 4 year old 350Z already needs replacing. I can't say I have too many gripes about this vehicle. It sucks, but I compare it to my 350Z which isn't fair. Used to have a high mileage Honda Accord and this thing is in about the same state with less engine problems believe it or not.

General Comments:

I would never buy this car again cause there are tons of better options in the price range. Some people say it is sporty and fun, well I must totally disagree. Besides the complete lack of power this thing handles like garbage! My 1992 Honda accord was MUCH more nimble than this thing. The Saturn is very scary in turns, I never even try to push it. This car is meant for one thing and that is going from point A to B with nothing in between.
