Faults:

Mechanically, nothing has gone wrong with this car, but it gets rear damage very easily. If you are a poor driver in going in reverse, this might not be the vehicle for you. I have gone through three bumpers because they crack so easily.

The headlights are terrible and I've had to replace them twice.

General Comments:

Car is very reliable so far.

Takes a beating physically.

Kind of ugly in back, and takes rear end damage poorly.

Some rust near the rear well.

I've enjoyed owning the car, and will continue to own it until it runs into the ground. My father has owned Toyotas since 1981, and 4 Camrys since 1986, and has never had any reliability issues, with over 100,000 miles on any of them.

Faults:

Check Engine light comes on and gives error code for some fuel vent filter error. Does not effect mileage or performance.

Front Driver's side exterior door handle face plate broke off. Toyota wants almost $90 for the new, color coordinated door handle. A black, paintable, after market handle costs around $25.

Front, left headlight is a real PITA to replace.

General Comments:

All in all, this is still the solid Camry that made the model famous. Current mileage is Driving 20-25k miles per year with all the confidence in this car. Fuel mileage is still in the 28-32 mpg range depending on the amount of highway driving done. The only time I have been stranded on the side of the road was due to a blown tire.

The suspension is a bit soft. New neighborhood speed humps and a loaded trunk will cause the car to scrape if going any faster than idle speed. Leg room in the front is enough for both me at 6'4" and my "little" brother at 6'8". Leg room in the rear is tight.

The 2.2L 4 cylinder engine is not exactly a speed demon, nor was it meant to be. There is plenty of power to haul a light load if need be and plenty of fuel economy to avoid breaking the bank at the pumps. Overall, the value if this car is fantastic.

Faults:

Engine light was on for the car inspection (Massachusetts). It said that an Evaporation sensor was the issue. Where exactly is that? I'd like to get it fixed, but want to know the rough cost before I do it. That way I know whether or not to take it to a garage or the dealership.

Also as to a previous comment above.

"It seems to be to low also. Every time I go over a speed bump I have to crawl up it because the car smacks down on them making a huge "clunk?"

I had this issue. If you're running on the original shocks and struts then they are probably bad. Having them replaced is a little expensive, but my car doesn't scrape on speed bumps any more. FYI.

General Comments:

The car isn't the most comfortable for me (6'2" 285lbs) but it's more comfortable than most. I more than likely will be looking at a Camry Hybrid next year. I'm at 168,000+ miles and it still runs like the day I bought it.

Faults:

I had an annoying rattling noise coming from the front passenger side wheel area.

General Comments:

Now that problem with strut noise has been solved, I'm very happy with the car.

Faults:

The right hand rear power window failed around 115,000kms - the regulator broke one evening, which meant the window could not be automatically raised. New regulator cost $70 and another $70 for labour.

On two occasions the car has failed to start first time - the motor turns over fine, however the engine then dies.

Apart from these problems, the only trips to the mechanic have been for scheduled services.

General Comments:

For a sports model, the car is quite conservative both mechanically and appearance wise. The alloys and spoiler are a nice touch, and do make the Touring model stand out from the other models.

The engine is silky smooth and remains composed even at high revs. It is quite happy to rev hard or simply cruise along.

The gearshift is a bit of a letdown, in that it is a long and inprecise throw between gears. Under normal circumstances, it is generally easy to make smooth and relatively quick changes though.

Fuel consumption is generally good - even with some liberal throttle openings, it is easy to achieve an average of about 10-11L/100km. Generally the car gets about 500-550km out of a tank (combination of freeway and city driving).

The suspension on the Touring model is stiffer than the other Camry models. The ride is quite firm and the handling is predictable, however I have yet to really push this car to its limits.

The interior has plenty of room, however the back seat is quite narrow and fitting three adults can be quite a squeeze. The seat fabrics and interior trim seem to stand the test of time and the harsh Australian sun.

The dash layout is logical and the orange needles and Touring insignia on the dials make for a unique touch.
