This car is/was awesome. Don't listen to the VW nerd who wrote the other comment. There is no question in anyone's mind that Toyota is a much more refined and superior auto manufacturer than VW! Come on, now!
The car has a 2.0 liter four cylinder packing 200 hp. Compare that to the anemic 170-180 of a V-6 Corrado, and you know what's up. Peformance: 0-60 about 6.5 Seconds, 1/4 mile: around 15.0. Top speed: around 149. This is a car you can buy for $6,000 and sell for the same or more even though it may have higher miles.
Not many problems, but when/if one surfaces it's usually costly.
If you have read the road&track comparison of the eclipse gsx, corrado vr6 and yota mr2. The unanimous decision was the corrado. It was just as fast as the mr2 and more refined.
Coming from a Camry owner, the MR2 is the perfect sports car. Being a Toyota, if anything like my Camry, should last a good long while, usually over 200k miles. Toyota engines are near bullet-proof IMHO.
To the comment above mine is uncalled for. And besides the only thing the Corrado can beat the MR2 at is breaking down. Toyotas just don't break down (Takes a lickin' keeps on tickin') and Volkswagens do quite a bit. It's just a fact of life. Live with it VW boy.
Yeah!! Tell the VW sucker how it is bro!!
VW stands for Volkswagen meaning car of the people, so everyone has one, the MR2 is more exclusive and refined, not many people have one.
I've owned a Corrado VR6 and now own an MR2 Turbo. I got my MR2 in standard 225bhp from Japan and the acceleration from 0 right to 168mph scared me after driving my clunky VW! They just don't compare. The VW may have 2 cyls more and be a bit quieter, but that's it.
It happens that I own 91 MR2 (shared with buddy) and 02 VW Passat. Mr2 is for Autocross fun only. The fact that I have chosen this car for sport speaks for itself. However lets don't get too vocal bashing VW. I have picked Passat over Camry for all good reasons (but the price).I'm sorry to say that many recent Toyota productions, particularly Camry, suffers tragically from the lack of personality that I call Oldsmobile killer syndrome. According to Car and Driver, even Toyota have recognized the problem. They plan to release new V10 super car and new Supra, in effort to "repair" the image damaged by the marketing strategy and the girlish (no offense) sport's car lineup.
0-60 in 6.5, and the 1/4 in 15.0??? sounds like someone can't drive stick. the stock times for 0-60 are around 5.5, and the stock 1/4 is usually 14.7. just to set the rcord straight. you mightve turned someone off to an mr2 bcuz of those incorrect times.
