2001 Volkswagen Golf 2.0 from North America

Summary:

Buyer Beware

Faults:

Mass Airflow sensor replaced 3 x in 2 years.

Windshield Wiper burned out at 50,000km.

Faulty car alarm system-would go off in the middle of the night for now reason 2 x's.

General Comments:

I love driving my car. This is my second Golf. My first Golf (1990) never had any issues. It was very reliable. This 2001 version has been very disappointing-I am having so many problem with a car with such low mileage. I am completely heart-broken. The 1-800 Customer Service Rep was also quite stand offish-not helpful at all.

2001 Volkswagen Golf variant (station) 1.6 from Iceland

Summary:

Alright - odd breakdown

Faults:

I bougtt this car second hand and after 2 months the water pump broke, which resulted in some more damage and major repair cost. The dealer said the warranty was no good as it has not been serviced at 100% correct timing. Luckily for me the second hand dealer had a 6 months warranty and paid the repair.

General Comments:

It was O.k. My friend loves golf but it is not my cup of tea. I had a accident with it after 8 months and the insurance bought it, I considered myself lucky to get rid of it.

2001 Volkswagen Golf Comfortline 2.0 from Israel

Summary:

Don't touch this car

Faults:

The front windows dropped 2 times (there was a recall, but only for the front)

The gearbox started to make noise after 6 months and was sent to be repaired, but the problem keeps coming back from time to time.

The right front bumper had a problem that had to be fixed.

General Comments:

It's a comfortable car and have a great air conditioning, but other than that - it's a crappy Golf and gives Volkswagen a bad name.

The dealer never admitted of the gearbox problem, the front windows were replaced, but he said that the problem is only with the front.

2001 Volkswagen Golf GLS 1.9 TDI from North America

Summary:

Living nightmare

Faults:

Rust on the car after 3 years.

Turbo blew after 3 years.

Electrical problems constantly.

Seats worn out in no time.

General Comments:

A very heavy and safe car couldn't ask for a safer car.

Rust problem after 3 years Volkswagon would not fix it,12 year corrosion warranty-hoax.

In 4 years I had the car since new spent about $15,000 in repairs not kidding.

In 2004 spent $6000.00 in repairs.

If I would've known would've bought a Lexus and had no repairs.

Dealer service not up to par, after warranty you get treated like a nobody.

If you do buy one after this definitely get the extended warranty you'll need it.

2001 Volkswagen Golf GT Tdi 130 pd 1.9 turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

A lovely car, but its longevity is a myth

Faults:

Imported model had from new.

Now 4yrs old, but only 14700 miles on clock.

Delivery problems

Condensation in indicator repeaters.

No gas in air con.

Only half of elements of rear defrost were working.

Rear door seal was torn. (marked with arrow, presumably at factory, but not replaced.

Recent problems

Front spring snapped-replaced at dealership-tried to charge me £210, but eventually agreed to charge to goodwill system.

Failed MOT at 14700 miles due to split rear suspension bushes. This item has cost me £310 to repair at dealership.

General Comments:

I have previously owned a V reg Golf which gave good service up to us parting at 65000 miles.

I am very disappointed in my 51 plate model which is becoming increasingly expensive to keep despite the low mileage.

I really love the car and it drives like a dream, but I am fed up with the problems and dealership maintenance charges.
