1998 Volkswagen Jetta wolfsburg 1.8 from North America

Summary:

A lemon with four wheels

Faults:

Front and Rear disks and pad replaced at 45,000 miles.

Throttle Body replaced at 59,000.

Driver's side window is starting to break.

Trim is pealing away from the car.

General Comments:

These cars are obviously not worth the money they cost to buy.

I would strongly suggest a Honda or Toyota.

Jetta s may be cute, but the fact that they are money pits don't make up for it.

Did I mention this car has been in for regular Volkswagen maintance on time?

Come on guys!!

If you do purchase a Volkswagen get a long warranty and Good Luck. You'll need it.

1998 Volkswagen Jetta Wolfsburg 2.0 from North America

Faults:

The driver's side front window refuses to work. The switch was going bad when I bought it and now it just won't work at all. Before it went totally it went up and down on its own.

The radio that was in there didn't work. I replaced it with the one I had from my old car. About a month after the radio was replaced, the alarm system went haywire. It goes off when driving and never shuts off. I had called the dealer and he said it was because of the alarm.

The radio in the car usually doesn't stay on by itself.. only if you are lucky. To get it to stay on you have to turn the key a slight bit more and hold it. Or turn the left turn signal. Or sometimes even if you bump the steering wheel the radio will turn off.

One day the car decided to keep stalling. Every time you would go to turn it back on, the on-dash clock would reset to 12:00. Even if the car didn't stall and you shut it off and went to get in it later, it would still reset.

General Comments:

The car is a great looking car and is very comfortable.

It has very many electrical and computer problems.

I had the same problem with the stalling. We initially thought it was the alternator, but it turned out to be the starter.

Had the same problem with the clock resetting.

ADD TO THAT the fact that the tachometer stayed at the last measured rpm, and power locks, sunroof and alarm system didn't work.

Turns out it had an electrical problem with the fuse (some cables were pealed under the dash causing problems). Mechanic charged 35 bucks to fix it.

Currently have an issue with water leak I don't know where the coolant is going and car shakes when I want get from 1st 2nd to 3rd.

O2 Sensor anyone?

Hope this helps.

1998 Volkswagen Jetta GL 2.0 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

Ask me when I reach 300,000 miles!!

Faults:

Replaced Throttle Body at 47000 miles.

Replaced wiring harness in driver side door that controls door locks/alarm system.

Replaced many pipes related to the exhaust system.

Replaced electronic switch in ignition that controlled my wipers, headlights, AC/heater blower, rear defrost and cruise control.

Paint problems from the time it was new, now 5 years later the clear coat is peeling off.

General Comments:

I addressed the paint problem when I bought the car, took it to the dealer several times. It was covered under the original warranty. They buffed it and made it look pretty, but refused to repaint the hood. The problem kept coming back after a few washes. Now it is 5 years later and my clear coat is peeling off my pretty blue paint. This greatly depreciates the value of my car and it is costly to have repainted.

The problem with the ignition made it impossible to drive in the rain or at night. Thankfully it was not too expensive to replace. (Well it would have been if I took it to a dealer!)

I have enjoyed this car and I've been told that if the oil is changed and it is maintained properly this motor will last up to 300,000 miles. Other things may go wrong, but you'll have a hard time killing the motor! I like the simplicity of the interior, and the enormous trunk! This car has the best handling of any car I've ever driven. So I guess I have a love/hate relationship with my Jetta.
