2002 Volkswagen Jetta GLS 1.8T from North America

Faults:

We had 3 engine failures in 3 years with our '02 VW Jetta.

The first failure occurred when the car was 11 months old and it was the ignition coils.

The following year, the #4 fuel injector failed.

A few days ago, the #2 fuel injector failed.

The worse thing about these failures is that they occur suddenly and without any warning.

My son uses this car to travel back and forth to college, which is 350 miles away. He barely made it home when the engine was running very poorly as a result of the fuel injector failing.

This is an extremely dangerous and unreliable car and not worth the $22,450 + tax we paid for it.

There was also a problem with the driver's side window. It fell open and was inoperable. This was inconvenient since it occurred in a college dorm parking lot and was raining. My son had to find someone to allow him to park the Jetta in their garage, and then drive 100 miles to the nearest VW dealership to have it fixed.

The warranty will expire in '07 and I am planning to trade it in for a Honda Civic as soon as I can!

This car is a huge disappointment and I will never purchase another VW product again.

Fuel jets problems occurred when the gas tank is used until empty. there is always some jerks in the bottom of the gas tank that cause injectors problems.

Solution: alway fill up at 1/8 max.

Summary:

Reliable? Dependable? Think again!

Faults:

Where do I start? Transmission replaced at 1,100 miles. Radio replaced twice because the first radio couldn't get any reception, it was replaced with the wrong radio and worked about 3 months. The drivers seat was off traction, and it turned out it was missing the traction on the right side. The passenger window broke inside the door, when rolling the window down the stoppers were bad, however; it was a recall and those were replaced. At 1 year after purchase the computer chip had to be replaced, the computer chip was messing with the transmission again.

2005, the shocks are needing replacing.

General Comments:

My Jetta was made poorly. It's been one thing after another. I thought I had bought a lemon, but now I am learning that most Jettas are like mine.

Be very careful, the sporty look, the glossy paint, and the status of having a VW is very misleading.

I have had nothing, but problems. My sense of security is missing as long as I own this vehicle.

I'll just have to say that overall, the Jetta is too much money - the dealers want too much money for them. Quality "OK", but not impressed.

The arm rest broke on mine the day I bought it. The dealer said tough! Fix it yourself! I was shocked! And for a 2.0L little four cylinder, it gets bad gas mileage! 26.5 miles to a gallon. Personally I should had kept my 2000 Lincoln LS with a 3.9L V-8. It got 22 miles to a gallon. But I'm not comparing apples to apples. There is no comparison. The Lincoln is the car to own!!!

Summary:

Not worth it, check out the Corolla or Civic instead

Faults:

Radio stopped working a month after I bought the car. Fuse had fallen out.

Armrest collapsed. This has been fixed under warranty, but has since collapsed again.

Plastic peeling off the drivers side interior door handle.

Rusting at bottom of the driver's side door.

Blinker has just stopped working on more than one occasion and the dealer can't figure out why.

Both passenger and driver's side windows have fallen off their track. Passenger side happened first and was repaired under warranty. They told me it was a defect with the window clips. When I asked if they could preemptively fix the driver's side, I was told that I had to wait until it broke, which it did, a year later... on I-95 on the way to my beach vacation.

Engine light comes on and off randomly.

Car does not change gears well.. it "jumps."

General Comments:

I will never buy another Volkswagen vehicle again. After all the little things that have gone wrong with this car, I don't trust that Volkwagen uses quality parts in ANY of their cars.

That being said, the Jetta is CUTE. It has amazing, almost infinite trunk space. I really wanted to love it.
