Ahh yeah!! My wife and I own a 2002 Alero with the 3.4L, and I will never buy another GM product ever!! We replace the brakes every few months, have had wheel bearings replaced a total of 5 times!! And have had the upper and lower intake gaskets replaced, the upper twice!! All in 144000 miles!!
Those of you with the coolant leak, or who have to keep adding coolant, you better have the intake gaskets looked at asap!! I had the same thing happen to my 1999 Grand Am, and the thing eventually blew up because the dealer couldn't find a leak, so every thing "should" be OK. Yeah right! Never buy another GM!!
I bought a 2002 Alero last year in Montreal, and it had 98000km on it when I bought it. I now have 155000KM on it and I have to change the wheel hub. I love the car and I got it for cheap (I know why now). I am going to fix that and the brakes, and I will try and sell it because I don't want to end up with a bunch of problems. It seems like quite the LEMON. I've always had Japanese and European cars, but I figured I'd try a North American car (WRONG).
I also had an Alero. Mine was a 1999. I got it in 2001. It had 43,000 miles on it. I got rid of it 21 months later with 93,000 miles on it. In that time I had to replace:
Heater Core
Thermostat
All Gaskets. Twice.
Full Suspension. Twice.
E-Brake
Front and Rear Brake Pads & Rotors. Twice.
Wheel Bearings
Oil Pump
Fuel Pump
Drivers Side Window, Regulator and Motor
Alternator. Twice.
Cig Lighter. Both.
Wiper Motor. Both.
Rear Window Defroster.
Climate Control Knob Section
Fan Motor for Heater
And this list goes on...
I bought it for $12,000
When I sold it, it was only worth $1,200
It was worth the loss just to get it gone. I hate Aleros!
I bought my 2002 Oldsmobile 2.2 4 cyl. Alero in June of 2007 and it had 59,000 miles on it. I started having problems on it as of November of last year, the front bearings had to be replaced.
January my ignition control module had to be replaced.
February it started stalling and had to wait to start it up, and then I took it to get checked because the service engine soon light would not go off. I replaced the oxygen sensor. The car ran great for a few days, and then started stalling again.
I had to replace the battery and then the fuel filter in April.
It is now end of May and I replaced the fuel pump and it still not starting. It will turn over, but not start; I have tried everything. I haven't even had the car a year, and am having so many problems with this car, and after reading this site, which I should have read first, there are many more problems to come. I don't know what to do with this car, because I still owe on it and it is out of warranty, which is my fault because I didn't buy the extended one. I have spent so much money on this car, and now know of nothing else to do with it, it has been parked most of the time I have owned it.
I own a 1999 oldsmobile alero. From the moment I drove it off the lot, I have been doing repairs. I have had the tire rods replaced, water pump, wheel bearings, and numerous other malfunctions to occur.
I am getting ready to replace the wheel bearings again this week. The passenger window works when it wants to. You take a chance by going to a drive through. The service engine light stays on. I took it to a GM dealership to have repairs made. They replaced a R&R coil, which had just been replaced less than six months prior. This is not a car I would recommend to anyone else. I see why GM is having financial difficulty.
