1994 Dodge Intrepid ES review from North America

"A money pit"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The transmission was rebuilt at about 60,000 miles due to slippage for $1400. I was told a seal leaks due to bad design--further reading on the net bears this out.

The rear brakes make a loud moaning noise. Not your average whine, now... It's loud!

The dealer (a Chrysler dealership) sold me a used car that OBVIOUSLY had had the front brake rotors burned. They were turned down, but there were still marks in them where the rivets burned in. I replaced these at 110,000 miles just because...

Inside tie rod bushings died at around 75,000 miles. Probably not unusual, except that they couldn't be replaced except by replacing the rods as well. It wasn't a pleasant job.

Front and rear shocks are toasted. I replaced the front at severe expense to my knuckles. The rears proved to be worse than me, and still haven't been done.

AC compressor died, probably due to coolant leaks. There's green stuff all around the hose joints.

The automatic cabin controls have always had strange glitches--switching back and forth between different modes continously about once per second comes to mind, most notably.

But then the transmission failed again at about 110,000 miles, on the highway. It was replaced with a used transmission for $1000. It's not much better.

The transmission has been the major problem with this vehicle, and I'm not alone. It's a dog, It's never shifted right, and never will. Look out.

General comments?

For an almost-full-size family sedan, the car goes like a bat outta heck. It's fun, when it works.

The trunk is huge.

Exterior and interior are cool looking, even after a few years.

I always like the overall engine design--the air intake plenum, the heads, and the 24 valves. A lot of power.
