1994 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo review from North America
"Reliable (unless you get a lemon), comfortable, good power and excellent economy for a mid-sized SUV"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Catalytic converter at 110000 and 200000 miles (barely passed last emissions test
so it probably needs another one - no
EGR valve on these)
Ignition switch around 140000 miles.
Alternator around 150000 miles.
Brake pads, rotors, pistons around 160000 miles.
Radiator at 165000 miles.
A/C high pressure line and condensor
around 170000 miles.
Motor and transmission mounts at 210000
miles.
Transmission at 215000 miles.
Exhaust manifold and radiator at 220000
miles.
Pads and rotors at 223000 miles.
General comments?
Until the transmission went out, it never
left us stranded.
Plenty of power from the I6 engine and if
you have (and use) the trip computer to
watch your gas mileage while accelerating
and cruising, you can get 20mpg around
town and 26 on the highway. When we first
got it (mind you it had 105K miles on it
then) we drove from Dallas to Houston and
got 28mpg on the highway going 65 with
the A/C on.
Until we hit the 210K mark, the repairs
had been pretty few much what you would
expect for the mileage. The transmission
probably wouldn't have needed rebuilding
if I had paid attention to the early
warning signs when I knew there was a
problem with the torque converter which
would have only cost about $300 to fix hen it first started acting up. Live and
learn.
One thing I have been extremely impressed
with is the leather seats. After 223K,
they are still like new. No cracks,
abrasions, anything. The only problem
is the passenger seat switches sometimes
have to be toggled back and forth to get
the seat to move. Contacts on the
switches are probably a little corroded.
Looking at the other reviews, it looks
like you have about a 20-25% chance of
getting one with chronic repair problems
(aka a lemon). But if you are not that
unfortunate, the Grand Cherokee is a
great vehicle. We just bought a 1997
with 92K to replace the '94.
