1998 Volkswagen Jetta review from North America
"Awesome bulletproof low cost transportation"
What things have gone wrong with the car?
Check engine light was on when I drove car of dealer's lot. I took it back and they replaced wiring harness and glow plugs.
General comments?
My first tank of diesel fuel gave me 48 MPG. I achieved as high as 50.4 MPG. I was impressed with the torque and pulling power of the small diesel engine on hills. I did not have to shift down and the engine did not appear to "lug down". I sold it to my daughter who lives in Minnesota and it is continuing to give her trouble free transportation. I have watched these Jettas hold their value on Ebay and many with more miles have sold for more than the $6,000 I paid at my local dealer! I originally bought the car to convert to run on used vegetable oil which would eliminate the cost of fuel.
