2005 Chevrolet Equinox from Mexico

Summary:

Last choice for a car purchase

Faults:

Constant brake problems and constant replacement of brake parts. The dealers always say the same thing; this is normal. The ABS systems supposedly takes over, and there is virtually little or no braking.

The CV joints tak, tak, tak, and this has also been repaired twice.

On the slightest bump in the road, the engine feels like it is going to fall out of the car.

There is constant rear end noise that also has been "fixed" several times.

All service has been done at Chevrolet dealerships; a lot of expense and very bad results.

Having owned more than 35 cars in my life for business and personal use, I would say that this 2005 Equinox is in the lower 2% for reliability, though it is a comfy drive. I would not recommend this car to anyone.

General Comments:

Styling is nice.

Interior spaces are ample and comfortable.

Cup holder is stupidly placed over the emergency brake.

Worst brakes.

Handles well on long trips as long as there are no bumps along the way, at which point the engine feels like it is going to drop out of the car.

Rear end noise.

Once your warranty expires, you might as well never take it to the dealer again. You can find better local mechanics that won't keep ripping you off for stuff, and they actually know how to fix things the right way. Dealers make most of their profits from service, so they do tend to try to do as much work as possible, to make the most money.

I am not saying you didn't need the work done though. My experience with Chevy has been pretty much the same. They are really expensive repair wise, and fall apart before 100K miles. I made the switch back to trouble free imports, and I never will buy another GM product.

2005 Chevrolet Equinox LT AWD 3.4L V6 from North America

Summary:

It's proven to be a versatile, dependable and comfortable vehicle

Faults:

There were two early warranty fixes; a bad rear wheel bearing, and a valve in the fuel vapor recovery failed, and made it difficult to put fuel in it. Both were fixed quickly and without any hassle.

General Comments:

The Equinox has been great during its first 5 years and 112K miles. Other than normal oil changes, tires & brakes and some fluid flushes, the car has performed well.

My wife loves her "Eek", and uses it for everything, and never thinks twice about heading out on a trip. It's comfortable and is big enough to tote our 2 medium sized dogs around.

We plan on keeping this Equinox going for another 112K miles.

2005 Chevrolet Equinox LT from North America

Summary:

Won't buy one again

Faults:

My 2005 Equinox has been fine except for the rotors. They have been awful from the start. I am on my 5th set at 66000 miles. I have upgraded pads, and the rotors still eat them up. 3 different mechanics and Chevy dealer can't figure it out. Something is wrong with the brake system, it should not be going through this many rotors. Haven't found a solution yet.

2 sets of rotors, 1 set of rear drums, & all pads and shoes replaced.

2 front strut links replaced.

1 driveshaft hanger bearing replaced.

Now the ABS brakes are acting up.

General Comments:

Like the Equinox, but should not have that many problems with the kms on it.

2005 Chevrolet Equinox LS V6 from North America

Summary:

It is not safe, they should all be recalled and fixed

Faults:

In the 2 years I've had this car, the following have gone wrong:

The wires that go to the driver's door broke and had to be fixed.

The rear wiper quit working.

I have to replace the following... Three wheel bearings, the drive shaft carrier bearing, front shocks and struts.

The worst and most dangerous of all... The throttle actuator control module. When it goes out, your vehicle will still run, but you can't go anywhere. This is a very serious problem that GM needs to address! My wife and daughter were almost killed when it went out. They were going up a hill through a s turns when it went out. All she could do is coast to a stop. No one could see her until they were right on top of them. They almost got hit several times! When I called GM and confronted them about it, they said they could do nothing but file it. I researched it, and there were over 500 vehicles that this has happened to.

If it's happened to you please call GM at 1-866-790-5600 and file a complaint. If enough people file a complaint, they will review it and put out a recall on it. I told them about what I found in my research, and they said it was hearsay.
