1997 Dodge Neon Sport from North America

Summary:

Love it!

Faults:

I replaced one tire.

Windows rattled.

Repaired air conditioning.

Fixed radiator

General Comments:

I loved my neon.

This car was quick, amazing on gas and looked great. It was comfortable, reliable and very, very fun.

Recently I had an accident with it and totaled the car (I hit a tree at 85km/h), however, the neon stood up extremely well and kept me from getting hurt.

I feel extremely safe in a neon and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

This car had a lot of km on it and still ran perfectly (only a few minor raepairs)

I am in the process of purchasing another one!

1997 Dodge Neon Sport 4 door 2.0 DOHC from North America

Summary:

A good beginner car

Faults:

The transmission went bad at 90,000. It still shifts, but very rough and jerk shifting from second to third. Spark plug wires are very faulty and the "check engine" light is on. The switch to turn on your brights does not stay.

General Comments:

Other than the problems stated above the car is very reliable and easy to fix.

This is a very good beginner car and if you wreck it, its no big deal.

You don't know how many cylinders you car has and if it is an automatic or manual? I find that kind of odd. Or were you being lazy when you were asked Engine and Transmission?

1997 Dodge Neon from North America

Summary:

Noisy, terrible bucket of bolts

Faults:

Oil leak in head gasket. Had to refill oil weekly. Thousands to repair, and apparently happens to ALL Neons around 70000 miles.

Transmission has always been jerky. Now transmission takes 1-2 seconds to engage an getting worse.

Check engine light always on. Is set off by the slightest sputter.

Engine is very noisy. Pick-up has deteriorated and it accelerates slower than it used to.

Advertised 40 mpg, actually gets only 20 mpg.

Tires blowing constantly. Alignment continues to get off track, even after fixed.

AC causes engine to shudder and squeal.

Breaks squeal, especially when wet.

Turning causes belts to squeal.

General Comments:

This is a terrible car. It looks good, but it's falling apart all over the place. Dodge/Chrysler knows about the head gasket oil leaks, but won't do anything about it.

Never buy this car. I'm never buying a Dodge or Chrysler again.

I just bought a 97 Dodge Neon (DOHC) and my check engine light was on all the time when the car was on. I looked in the engine and the previous owner never changed the air filter or the spark plugs and the spark plug wires began to arc and miss fire. The trans needed to be rebuilt and I needed some new bulbs. I bought some American Products Company spark plug wires and put them on, new bulbs and took the trans in to get rebuilt. The head gasket had been replaced at 71,254 by the previous owner.

1997 Dodge Neon from North America

Summary:

A tragedy of peeling paint

Faults:

Fuel pump failed, had to replace.

Lapis blue paint began peeling in chunks on the door.

Beginning to peel/crack on top.

Leaks fluids regularly.

General Comments:

The number one trait of all neons of this time is the inevitable peeling paint. At first I thought it was exclusive to the lapis blue color, but it truly is not. I purchased a small bottle of paint from the dodge dealer and after patching some areas up have stopped a lot of the peeling.

The car has not given me a lot of mechanical problems.
