2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0 SOHC from North America

Summary:

Overall, a nice truck

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong so far.

General Comments:

So far so good.

The 5 speed shifts a little hard into 3rd gear, (throw is pretty far.. so you can't really speed shift).

The 4 wheel drive works awesome, and shift on the fly is nice for snow and ice...

Overall I like it. It is nice to be driving a 5 speed again.

2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L V6 from North America

Summary:

Tough and reliable truck!

Faults:

The alternator was toast after a couple thousand miles.

General Comments:

So far so good, I really love my truck. It performs well especially now that I replaced the stock restrictive exhaust and intake, but those cat. converters (4 of them apparently) really hold it back still. Other than then alternator going after a few thousand miles of owning it I haven't had any other problems. The interior is nice, but the seats could be a bit more comfortable and the extended cab is nice too as long as you're passengers don't mind being a little bit cramped. If you're looking for a fun to drive, reliable and tough mid-sized truck I would go with this.

2002 Ford Ranger XLT 4.0L V6 from North America

Summary:

I should have bought a Dodge!!

Faults:

Both front diff seals (twice).

Horn stopped working.

Fan rattles at 2500 rpm.

Bad screech on cold start.

Front left sway bar broke going 10 mph.

CV axle went bad.

Electric driver side lock does not unlock.

Fuel injector needed replacing.

Idles at 1500 rpms when you first start it.

General Comments:

The truck has averagely comfortable seats; that's about all the good.

It's slow, horrible fuel economy (12 mpg, 13 if I'm lucky), and I've had to spend entirely too much money on it.

The handling is sad, even for a truck. The power is pathetic, and something new breaks every month.

To listen to the pathetic engine grind and squeak all the time is embarrassing. If you're looking for a real reliable truck, I would recommend looking elsewhere, or maybe I just got a bad one.

Either way, I'll never own another Ranger.

Hey I'm the original poster of the review and I'm making an update. I noticed a really bad rattling noise coming from the front end when I go over any kind of bump now, it sounds like I have a bag of chains tied to my front bumper! I'll let everyone know what it was after I take it to the shop, AGAIN!

2002 Ford Ranger XLT 3.0 V6 from North America

Summary:

Very solid, great value

Faults:

Nothing, besides the day I bought it.

I went out to the lot, it fired right up from dead cold. Had a lengthy test drive, ran like a top.

Signed all the papers, took the keys and went to drive off the lot and... it wouldn't start!!!

Quick look-see by a mechanic yielded a verdict of "bad fuel pump". Major Bummer, had to wait until the next day to drive her home, but got a brand new fuel pump installed on the dealer's dime.

No problems since.

*As another reviewer remarked, the rear-end does make a brief, weird growling sound when accelerating hard from a dead stop. No big deal, doesn't seem to do any harm or affect anything. Sounds kinda cool!

General Comments:

It's a truck, but it handles almost like a sports car.

The 5 speed manual tranny shifts very sure & smooth and the clutch feels solid as a rock.

The 3.0L V6 engine makes this thing Move. Very quick and sporty, strong acceleration in all gears.

4 wheel Anti-Lock Brakes feel very solid.

Very Quiet interior and a surprisingly good stock sound system.

I wish it had a tilt steering wheel, I have short legs (5'8") so I have the seat set pretty far forward which means I kinda have to squeeze my legs under the steering wheel getting in and out. Otherwise pretty roomy and the seats do slide and tilt way back even with the regular cab.

My next truck will be a ranger.
