2000 Honda Civic LX 1.6 from North America

Summary:

Reliable and dull

Faults:

Noise from front suspension.

Noise from rear suspension.

Paint chips easily.

Two loud dashboard rattles.

General Comments:

Reliable, but disappointed with build quality in terms of rattles and suspension noises.

The front seats are poorly padded and become very uncomfortable after an hour or so of driving.

The steering is numb, the handling is competent. Generally, the car is competent but boring like most Japanese cars.

I wish that I could get a new Peugeot instead, but they don't sell them in the USA anymore.

2000 Honda Civic VTi 1.5 SOHC VTEC from Singapore

Summary:

A class above the rest, but not cheap

Faults:

Air-con expansion valve needs replacing - lets out a whine now and then but does not affect its operation.

Wind cut noise on the A pillars at high speeds (110 km/h) - solved by the dealer adding a strip of rubber to each side of windshield seal at the A pillars.

Few minor rattles due to leather work and the alarm which was installed locally - solved by the dealer summarily at 1000km servicing.

General Comments:

Super smooth CVT transmission and much improved low end torque over the previous model - much more driveable with more go from 2000-5000 RPM. Above 5000 RPM, you know where the 15bhp loss compared with the old model came from - VTEC much milder and does not pin you to seat.

Extremely spacious cabin and boot - beats some 2 litre cars.

Very well screwed together and all panels shut with a solid feel.

Corners well due to the short front.

Taut jiggly ride due to the stiff suspension.

Rides very well at high speeds - you tend not to realize how fast you are going - very effortless for a 1.5L.

2000 Honda Civic Si 1.6 liter from North America

Summary:

Don't buy this death trap

Faults:

What hasn't gone wrong? The exhaust fell off while I was driving and scraped on the ground, the wiper motor was messed up, the interior rattles so bad I can't hear the already terrible sound system, it eats air filters for lunch, and the engine makes some very odd noises above 50 mph.

General Comments:

Decent acceleration.

I had a '99 Civic Si... it was the best car around for the money. Bought it brand new... nothing ever broke on it until I wrapped it around a telephone pole... due to its outstanding acceleration. That broke a few things. ;)

Your car is an animal, "... it eats air filters for lunch...".

Your car mighta ate the neighbor's cat and your car is having some kind of digestion problem, "... the engine makes some very odd noises above 50 mph." Previous owner probably did not take good care of the car.

2000 Honda Civic HX 1.6L gasoline from North America

Summary:

Efficient, well built little car

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with the car at all.

General Comments:

Excellent commuter, but the seats are too uncomfortable for trips of any length. The performance is remarkably poor.... no torque, I find I have to wind the engine up past 5000rpm to get anything out of it. The stock tires are a bit lacking in performance, but great in weather. All in all, a very solid, satisfying car that will never be raced around.

First of all, if you need to engage the VTEC past 5000RPM your engine has problems and you have no clue how to work the VTEC system to make power...

Honda has great acceleration beyond 3000RPM and as soon as the VTEC kicks in, usually around 4,000rpm, there's plenty of pulling power, unless you live in the rockies and expect rocket-rides up a 5000' hill.
