2000 Hyundai Accent GL from North America

Summary:

Not Impressed

Faults:

First week of ownership, my oil seal was leaking.

My check engine light came on during the second month of ownership ("it was just a computer problem").

The paint is pealing on my bumper.

This car has been recalled 4 times (if I'm not mistaken).

Dealer service is awful and warranty is misleading.

Many things were not covered under this that "should have been".

Transmission jumps a lot an it is getting worse.

After one year there was black smoke coming out of my air conditioner vents (what was this, I don't know, but it cost me $300 to fix out of pocket)

Brakes wear very fast.

General Comments:

It is okay to get you here and there. If you drive a lot do not by this car because you will always be going to the dealer.

I would not buy another.

I had the same problem with my bumper. The original bumper was fine, but someone ran a stop sign and hit my car, ruining the bumper. I got a brand new bumper shipped from the factory and a week later the paint was peeling. I took it back to be resprayed at no cost to me. The Hyundai guys told me that this is a huge problem and they have to respray bumpers all the time because of the type of plastic Hyundai uses. Apparently the paint won't adhere to the plastic, but I guess it's cheaper to respray later than to fix it in the plant.

Summary:

I got the bad apple!!!

Faults:

My car usually runs great, but I have had two major problems. At about 10,500 miles I started having some shifting problems, I took it to the dealer and they replaced the pulse generator - problem solved. At 21,000 miles my car would not go into overdrive and again had other shifting problems; took it back to the dealer and they replaced the reed switch. This, however, did not fix the problem I went back and they replaced a cable. I didn't have trouble again until 25,000 miles; that's when my transmission was replaced. At about 52,300 miles I noticed that it lost all power when taking off, I went back to the dealership where they replaced the plug wires. Now my car has 53,000 miles on it and is having the transmission replaced for a second time - this time it totally locked up in the middle of the road in another state where I was stuck for 8 hours waiting on transportation.

General Comments:

I really like my car when it runs, but it is not at all dependable and the "best roadside assistance" leaves you sitting if you aren't old enough to get a rental car.

The exact same thing happened to mine! I had the transmission replaced at 50,000 miles. The check engine light comes on for what seems to be no apparent reason at really random times and then just goes off again, at random times.

The oil must be changed at exactly 3,000 miles. if I let it go beyond, even by a couple hundred miles, the oil light will come on and there will be only a tiny amount of oil left.

I have been having the same "shifting" and car cutting off a few minutes into a trip problems. It wouldn't change gears into 4th or 5th when up to about 45-55 miles/hour. When it shut down, I could usually just stop and restart the car and that would seem to fix the shifting problem.

It totally died last week and now needs yet another transmission. This is honestly the worst car I have ever seen, owned or heard about. It feels totally unsafe to drive and has caused nothing, but problems.

The only positive thing I can possibly say is that it does get really good gas mileage (32/gallon highway)

You people need to check your oil at least once a week!

I have an '04 Accent. Have only made one payment on it and it has been back twice already. First, it was shifting hard and getting stuck in 3rd gear. It was burning the grass were I parked it and getting extremely hot. The radio is malfunctioning and the whole car seems to rattle. On the first trip they found nothing wrong with the transmission, but they said I had an O2 sensor malfunction and the converter was stopped up. They replaced my manifold assembly and the O2 sensor (under warranty). They also reprogrammed the engine control module. Everything was fine for a few weeks.

Then, the shifting problems came back and the check engine light came on. I took it in for a second time and they replaced the pulse generator (under warranty). I'm not sure why this wasn't discovered during the first time in. They are also ordering me a new radio.

I love the car, great gas mileage, but it seems like it's going to be in the shop more than in my driveway. Thank goodness for the warranty. I am sure I will be trading it in before it's up. It's great they offer one, but it's very time consuming to keep taking it for service.
