1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.0L from North America

Summary:

Very reliable and inexpensive to own

Faults:

Replaced front CV shaft boots, axle seals and all brake pads at 80K.

Replaced radiator at 167k.

Replaced front and rear rotors and pads, and front calipers at 167K.

Rear driver's side window quit working - was not the motor. I found a broken wire in the loom that goes from the body into the driver's door to connect to the master window switch. Easy fix with a butt connector!

General Comments:

I can't believe all of the problems out there. Our '99 is my wife's vehicle and our vacation/travel vehicle. We live in Colorado, and subject this thing to extreme weather conditions and terrain, and it has never let us down. We chose it because of the all time all wheel drive, and love its capability in the snow.

We have driven it to California and back without worry. I am very thorough and particular with preventative maintenance, and maybe that is the key.

We plan on keeping it for another 3 years, and replacing it with a used 2011 model (which will have big tires to fill!)

With thorough maintenance, this has been an extremely reliable and inexpensive vehicle to own vehicle.

The limited option provides a very comfortable interior - we added a DVD player for the kids.

Currently at 180K miles and counting - I have seen regular Cherokee's with 300k!

High cost to maintain

Faults:

Rear tail lights burn out, had to replace whole driver side assembly, electric fan relay (twice).

Trans slipping, brakes squeal since bought it, replaced once, rear axle noise, when in 4wd steering, is very stiff; noise when turning. We get 11-15mpg in town, maybe 17 on the highway.

Wife loves it.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4.0 from North America

Summary:

Great little SUV

Faults:

OK, first off, I love my 99 Grand Cherokee.

Yes, the factory speakers went bad, so what, they are junk to begin with. I'm a car audio tech, and there is no such thing as a good factory speaker.

Yes, my back passenger window went bad. OK, 200 bucks for parts, and I did have to put new brakes and rotors on it, but who cares, I do it every three years or just under 20 thousand miles, but it's like a 100 bucks for all four corners, and I do the work myself, big deal.

There have been some small things like the battery and some seals. It's a vehicle that's driven every day, it's to be expected, it's called wear and tear.

My rear differential just went bad; sucks, but for 250 thousand miles, I'm not really bummed.

I think people are underrating these vehicles on small stupid stuff. There are some issues I have noticed with this model and year that I hear some people talk about, that I understand, but at the end of the day, it's mechanical moving parts, they wear out either due to defect, owner stupidity and the way they drive, and some just want to blame it on the vehicle or just age.

I love my Jeep, and wouldn't give it up for anything.

Anyone has any questions on how to work on them or GM vehicles, email me weeden_john@hotmail.com

General Comments:

Peppy, reliable, and easy to work on, and the parts aren't expensive.
