1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee from North America

Faults:

Our 99 Jeep brakes required service at 55,000 miles. We have had no problem up to that point. However, we have been told that the Rotor used in the 99 model cannot be "trimmed." Thus, we are required to replace all four rotors.

General Comments:

Overall we are very pleased with the vehicle.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited 4.7 V8 from North America

Summary:

Bad on gas mileage, but we love it!

Faults:

At 45000 miles the airbag clock spring failed causing the airbag light to ding. Only a $150 fix, but extended warranty paid.

Steering wheel leather wears out quick.

Front brakes shimmy and shake pretty badly.

General Comments:

We love our Jeep. We owned an Eagle Vision that was a mechanical nightmare before the Jeep so we were a little skeptical at first about buying another Chrysler product, but we have grown to love it.

We have heard the noises in the drive train like everyone else, but they either went away or we just don't notice it anymore. Change all the oils at recommended intervals and the Jeep should be fine.

The Jeep doesn't get very good gas mileage, but we knew that before we bought it. My wife drives it so the mileage isn't too bad because she doesn't hot rod it like I would.

Buy the most extensive zero deductible extended warranty you can find and forget about it. The Jeep will last a long time.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee from North America

Summary:

Dependability is non existent

Faults:

I currently have 34,000 miles, never venturing on dirt or known bad roads.

My brake rotors squealed excessively, I returned the car back to the dealer primarily for this discrepancy (less than 20,000 miles. The dealer admitted that there was a fleet wide vendor problem with rotors. The dealer fix at that time was to resurface (grind down) my existing rotors. A few thousand miles later I had to pay to get rotors and calipers replaced (less than 34,000 miles).

The passenger side rear door electric window became inoperative the first year, failing again the fourth year. The dealer mechanic admitted that there were many similar switch relay problems with other customers.

The emergency brake handle became inoperative in the third year (disengaged from cable).

An oxygen sensor failed in the third year (check engine light illuminated) not covered by warranty.

General Comments:

I wished I would have read an article like this and saved myself and family a lot of grief.

1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited 4.7L 8 cylinder. from North America

Summary:

An extremely poor consumer choice!

Faults:

We have driven this car for 3 years, having chosen it as our company car on a lease program with the option to purchase at the end of the 3-year lease program.

We have just been notified that the car, only 3 years old, now requires a brand-new transmission.

Apparently Chrysler does not stand behind their product and when trying to obtain information from a local dealer, our call was transferred to 5 different people all of whom claimed that it was not their problem.

We are extremely unhappy with this situation and cannot believe that it is standard procedure for a 3-year old car to require a complete transmission replacement.

We would never buy another Chrysler product based on the lack of customer service and the fact that a company would treat this as a commonplace occurrence.

We have also had a problem with the steering wheel becoming "frayed". We have never encountered this in any car. This is the first Jeep Grand Cherokee (fully loaded) that we have purchased although we have leased them through the benefits program before.

General Comments:

This car is uncomfortable to ride in, expensive to run and obviously poorly constructed.

Chrysler Corporation was a company that I thought had high integrity and pride in production... this situation has convinced me differently.
