2001 Pontiac Grand Prix SE 3.1 from North America

Summary:

Will never buy another Pontiac again

Faults:

This car has had major mechanical failures.

1st transmission went at 45,000, and the 2nd transmission at 62,000. Thankfully - both were covered by extended warranty through Hertz.

The lower intake manifold gasket was the next major thing to go ($1400).

Tie rods needed work at about 100K... and last but not least - blown head gasket at 191,000.

I really wanted to like this car, as it was comfortable & sporty looking... but it has been a serious money pit.

I have always kept up on regular maintenance service, and the car was driven on the freeway for commuting.

The head gasket blew without any warning last week. I'm done - not sinking anymore money into this car, & I certainly will never buy another Pontiac. I know that I got a lot of miles out of this vehicle, but it has had way too many issues...

2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3.8 from North America

Summary:

I like it, would definitely recommend one

Faults:

Check engine light came on at 150000 km. Took to local GM dealer; something to do with EGR valve. 150.00 to fix, no problems since.

General Comments:

Very reliable, drive in temperatures from -40C to +45C, never any starting issues or overheating.

Lots of power from the 3.8l V6. As for comments on this site about quad 4 Grand Ams being quicker, I do not think the Grand Prix GT driver with whom you were racing knew he or she was in a race.

From a person who has driven many types of passenger cars in my 40 years, you get a good bang for your buck from these cars. They handle well, have good braking systems, and are comfortable to drive.

I have to agree, I think a lot of the boasting about winning "races" on this site is due to that same reason.

Just because you pull away from someone at a stoplight, doesn't mean that you "won" a race. Most of us are responsible & mature drivers, and would not engage in such immature and foolish behavior. When we see someone blasting away from a stoplight, we just shake our heads.

Summary:

Would not buy this!!!

Faults:

Well first I bought a 2001 Pontiac Grand Prix on January 26, 2010, and I drove it back and forth to work for 7 days, and it started to shift hard, so I called the dealership where I got it, and they told me to bring it to the service department, and they would take a look at it. Well needless to say it didn't get fixed.

I went back yesterday, and looked at another one. Same year and everything. I took it home and drove it to work, which is about 45 miles on way. On my way back home, this car started to do the same thing. I am looking to take this one back and not getting another GM. I wouldn't recommend this car to anyone.

Junk.

When you are looking at 9 year old used cars, you are going to find many that need work. Even when you buy a new car, you might find some defects.

2001 Pontiac Grand Prix GT 3.8 V6 from North America

Summary:

Nothing great to look at, runs great!

Faults:

The power windows, well none of them work at all. That's it, the car is a champ, the alternator went out and I replaced it, the left rear lateral rod broke and I replaced it.

Besides the ABS messing up with the vibrating thing it does, and normal fixes, the Grand Prix is a good one.

I think the wheel bearing might be going out, I'm not sure, it just is a mild constant buzzing.

General Comments:

I never thought I would end up driving this car as long as I have. It's really surprised me sooo much with the long trips I have taken it on.
