1998 Toyota Camry LE 2.2 litre/ 4 cylinder from North America

Summary:

This car is a poor representation of itself

Faults:

The right front door glass slipped out.

The power window button on right rear came loose.

The power button enclosures on both front doors are spreading open revealing padding on the inside.

The air-condition unit is blowing black greasy material out the front vents.

The right front strut mount rattles noisily.

General Comments:

As the owner of a 1992 Camry LE and a 1995 Camry LE, I have come to expect the best from Toyota.

As you may imagine, I am totally disappointed with the result of my purchase.

I am also disappointed because the Toyota service department protocol seems to be set up to deny repairing these faults.

1998 Toyota Camry Toyota XLE V6 3.0 Liter from North America

Summary:

This is an awesome car

Faults:

Nothing has gone wrong with this car at all. However, my husband and I own a 1996 Pontiac Grand Am, and it is terrible. We've spent over $4000.00 repairing this car in the past 2 years, and the car only has 70,000 miles on it. We bought it with only 20,000 miles on it. Pretty sad huh?

General Comments:

I would definitely recommend a Toyota. This is the best car I have ever owned. It's spacious, safe (I have a 3 month old son, and I feel so safe when I'm in my car.) and extremely reliable. I love the power, it's one of the fastest V6 vehicles I've ever driven. The stereo is awesome, I love the CD player, and the aluminum wheels are extremely stylish. I also love the power seats on both the driver and passenger side. The trunk is extremely spacious as well. I wouldn't trade it for any other car.

1998 Toyota Camry LE 2.2L from North America

Summary:

The best there is from the best there is.

Faults:

At 56600 (acquisition mileage), the car needed several valves and manifolds cleaned, and other odds and ends either tightened or replaced.

Brakes are loud (although dealer says nothing is wrong with them)

General Comments:

This car is one of the most comfortable cars we've ever owned. The seats are comfortable, there is ample storage space, massive leg room in the back, and an overall luxuriously smooth ride. While this car isn't as smooth as a Cadillac, it is definitely comparable to the Lexus ES 300 for the model year. We've had no major reliability problems, except for some loud brakes. Toyota again lives up to their reputation for quality with this vehicle. If I may say so, save $10,000, bypass the Lexus ES 300, and get its equal in comfort (and styling really; each looks very down to earth), the Toyota Camry. This car just doesn't let you down.

1998 Toyota Camry 2.2 GL Wagon 2.2 petrol from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Great low-performance family wagon

Faults:

Nothing at all.

General Comments:

Very spacious and comfortable whether on the open road or stuck in traffic.

The 2.2 engine does not have enough grunt for this size of car.

Very low equipment levels (wind-up windows and manual aerial!).

1998 Toyota Camry Conquest 3L, V6 from Australia and New Zealand

Summary:

Reliable

Faults:

Nothing.

General Comments:

Bought this care because it scored the highest on a reliability survey in Australia's choice magazine. Whilst not a particularly attractive car, on the outside or inside, I'm very happy with it functionally. It also got a good score for passenger and driver protection in case of an accident.

I have to agree. The comfort and noise levels are fantastic! I test drove a 98 Holden Commodore and the Ford Falcon (both 6 cylinders) and while the v6 Camry didn't have quite the same amount of power, the quietness and smoothness of the car won me over. I bought the Camry Conquest straight away and I have never had any problems. The Motorama Dealer in Brisbane Queensland was fantastic, I would recommend them to any one.

1998 Toyota Camry LXE 3.0 Liter V6 from North America

Summary:

To be avoided

Faults:

The vehicle was sold as a Toyota Certified Car. It had been in lease service in Michigan. Within a few days after purchase, it was emitting a cloud of blue smoke for a few seconds after start. The dealer replaced the valve stem seals under warranty. It's very odd that I could find no sign of such major work. The dust on the engine was undisturbed. We have always used 5W-30 full synthetic oil; and changed it frequently. Now, again the car shows the same smoke. There is a design defect in the 3 Liter V6.

General Comments:

At first glance this is a well detailed car.

It has ample performance for Los Angeles Traffic.

Unfortunately, the quality that Toyota brought to the US market is only a memory.

I don't think there is a design defect in the 98 model, because I own a 1998 Toyota Camry XLE V6 3.0 Liter as well, and it is the best car I have ever owned. I don't use 5w-30 oil in mine I use 10w-30 Valvoline oil. That is the only type of oil I will use is Valvoline. I mean every car company makes mistakes even Toyota. You can't expect them to always be perfect. I mean at least your car didn't leave you at the side of the road all the time. My husband and I own a 1996 Pontiac Grand AM. We've had it for 2 years. When we purchased it, it had 20,000 miles on it and we've spent $4000.00 dollars in repairs on that stupid car. Just rethink your decision.
