2002 Hyundai Elantra GLS 2.0L Inline-4 from North America

Summary:

Absolutely amazing

Faults:

Headlights have been sporadic on how long they last. One dealership put it in and told me they were "self aiming". Went to a new dealership and have been going there since.

Can't point the vents up or down, just left or right.

Gas mileage is great, on trips I average 40+ miles per gallon.

General Comments:

Great car that rarely has problems and you don't have to put a lot of money into. As said earlier, you can't aim the air conditioning vents up or down. Air kicks on and cools down the car very quick.

2002 Hyundai Elantra VE 2.0 litre from North America

Summary:

I love this car

Faults:

After the timing belt was changed there is squeaking when I turn the wheel all the way on cold winter days. The front left wheel seems to always get out of alignment. (might be just my driving).

General Comments:

Pretty comfortable ride and I love the interior. Lots of space in the back. The stock sound system is reasonably clear and just loud enough.. A good sub will probably do the trick.

Overall I love this car, but doing the scheduled maintenance adds up.

2002 Hyundai Elantra GT 2.0 from North America

Summary:

A giant disappointment

Faults:

Brake lights shorted out the second day I owned it.

Transmission case cracked at 30,000.

All four door panels rattle badly, dealer says cannot fix them regardless of the fact I am willing to pay.

Clunking noise coming out of rear (I think it is the suspension) Dealer cannot hear the noise.

Resonating noise when shifting gears. One dealer said they cannot hear it. Second dealer say they can hear it, but they don't know what it is.

Water leaks in from above the windshield on the passengers side.

Brakes make a terrible growling noise sometimes. Been checked by dealer who says they are fine, but the noises are still there.

I have had to put 6 headlights in the car to date.

Speedometer jumps around sometimes indicating radically different speeds.

Trim around door and some weatherstripping is already wearing out.

Sometimes when starting the engine it rev to 4000rpm and stays there for approximately 30 seconds. Then tries to stall.

General Comments:

The acceleration of this car is to be expected from a car in this price range.

The air condition performance is horrible. I live in a moderate climate and even then it does not cool the occupants down even on high.

The handling of this car scares me. The car does not feel well footed. Through turns and down the highway it feels like it is bobbing and weaving like a Cessna. So scary that my wife and two good friends refuse to drive my car.

I traded in my 1998 Dodge Neon coupe for this car as I was needing four doors. What a big mistake!

2002 Hyundai Elantra EL from North America

Summary:

Keep the exterior immaculate and lease, u'd be happy

Faults:

Engine oil drip at 96000, cost 300$ CAD

Nothing else really. Maintenance is very cheap for this car.

General Comments:

I leased the car for 48 months, 96K. Engine ran fine, brakes still function and I just changed tires since it was a lease. Though oil leakage was the first sign that this car should go.

It has a high torque, fuel efficiency is not that good, it's spacey, steering wheel is too loose, suspension seems too soft.

Service of Huyndai is not that bad overall, though watch out if you are leasing yet Hyundai is not a good second hand buy so if you are not thinking to lease (or purchase) another Hyundai, expect some strict appraisal that could cost you as much as 2000$ even though, same condition with a Japanese would not cost over 500$.

Overall the car was ok, but I do not think I would buy another Hyundai, which was the same with Ford and Mazda for me, but of course a Toyota or Nissan are always flag ups.
