2000 Daewoo Lanos S from North America - Comments

"Good car for the money!"

What things have gone wrong with the car?

The seats tend to move (tilt) back every other day and I have to constantly raise them (very annoying).

I had to put on seat covers after about a year because the cloth was discoloring and started to open at one seam.

I don't like the front of the car at all.

General comments?

I liked that is very economic to run and is very reliable.

I hate that the value has decrease so badly that if I trade it in is worth next to nothing.

The 1.6L engine actually is peppy and responsive.

I hate that it makes a weird sound when I step a little hard on the gas, almost like metal hitting metal.

My Daewoo Lanos 2000 is a great little car. Only problem is when it comes to repairs. Ordered parts usually take weeks to get now...

Just because you don't like the look of the front of the car (personally I do) it hardly constitutes a fault. And people don't normally buy cars they don't like the look of.

That Metal hitting Metal sound that you hear is what we call "Spark Knock" caused by cheap fuel and stomping on the gas.

My 2000 lanos is making a knocking sound almost like the lifters or rods but the oil is full as well as the other fluids. the timing belt broke at 80,000 miles and when it was replaced it never ran the same can anyone help me?

If the timing belt broke you probably have bent valves now. Costly to say the least.

If you suffered from timing belt failure then you had your entire cylinder head overhauled. The knocking sound is probably rod knock. I have rebuilt various Daewoos and the Lanos seems to damage rod bearings when the pistons crash into the valves due to timing belt failure. The knock will develop several hundred miles after the overhaul was completed. Gradually getting worse with time. The reason the car will not run the same is due to the knock sensor detecting the knock and retarding ignition timing thus diminishing performance. The only fix is pulling the engine from the car, opening it up, and re-grounding the crankshaft and replacing the rod bearings with new undersized units.

Well the solution regarding the metal sound is the timing tensioner; get it checked properly. That could be the only problem.
