2002 Ford Mondeo ST220 3.0 V6 24v petrol from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Merc quality, BMW dynamics, Ford price

Faults:

No faults.

General Comments:

I am shocked and amazed at how good this car is. Not only does it comprehensively out-perform and out-handle my previous Mercedes C280 Sport, but it seems just as well made.

Engine is a peach - power everywhere and a lovely growl. Love the Recaros and the classy (if German rip-off) dash layout. Steering and handling are flawless. Didn't realise front wheel drive could be so capable.

My friend drives a BMW 328i and was on the verge of ordering a new 330Ci when my ST was delivered. Now he's driven it, he's thinking twice, but being a badge snob I doubt he'll actually do it. Says a lot for the ST's ability though that he's even thinking about it.

As someone who couldn't care two hoots about the badge on a car, I don't believe a better all rounder exists at this price, or some way above it. You don't need to buy German to get a top notch sports saloon.

My friend, sure you don't have to buy a German car. Just try a FRENCH one, equal and much better to yours, the PEUGEOT 406, 3.0 V6 24v petrol Manual, which is a lot of a fabulous car. If you dare, just try it!!

And at last but not least,do not make the mistake to contrary it, in any road.

You'll be surprised for good.....my friend.

2002 Ford Mondeo Zetec 2 litre turbo diesel from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Good value and all round performance

Faults:

Engine stutter around 2000 rpm.

Slow to warm up from cold.

Emergency jack fiddly to use when changing wheel.

Radio cassette turned on and off by itself, replaced under warranty.

General Comments:

Affordable speed and economy, combined with bags of space in the estate version and reassuring handling. Comfortable and easy to drive.

My first Ford after years of Audi and Saab motoring. I've not been disappointed.

The only niggling fault is the consistent engine stutter that my UK dealer recognises but Ford have not yet cured.

2002 Ford Mondeo GhiaX 2.0 Tdci from UK and Ireland

Summary:

Superb handling, performance and economy

Faults:

Nothing so far.

General Comments:

I bought this automatic diesel without a test drive. I had previously owned a Mondeo Ghia X diesel and got over 190,000 miles out of it without any major problem - didn't even have to replace the exhaust, my son is now driving it.

First impressions of the new Mondeo are good, the performance compared with my old Mondeo is stunning - it pulls away like a rocket and although I am still taking it fairly easy on the engine, cruising at motorway speeds is quiet and smooth.

The engine is noisy when cold and up to about 30mph is rougher than I would like and at 30 the auto gearbox seems to have trouble deciding whether to be in 3rd or 4th. I have found that I tend to use the manual shift to force it to 4th gear, after that it is really smooth and the auto box works well.

The cruise control work well and makes a real difference on a journey.

Even on my first tank of diesel I got over 50mpg.

The leather seats are very comfortable with excellent support under the thighs.

2002 Ford Mondeo Special Edition 2.0 TDCI from Netherlands

Summary:

Bad driving, fast, but stalls

Faults:

Engine stalls.

Starting the car, and switching between forward and backward is a nightmare, stalls all the time.

Lights break often.

General Comments:

Car is speedy.

Plenty of space, but drives like a nightmare due to the stalling problems.

According to Ford this is normal, they removed the cable for the gas pedal, prefer old fashioned working systems.

The new Ford Mondeo is rubbish; it stalls and cuts out when changing gear. Have nearly crashed the car twice, not a nice feeling when you drive along and lose power steering and power assisted brakea, but Ford do not care.
