Ditto on the timing chain issue. Bought the Nissan new in 2004, always maintained oil changes and checkups, but have had major issues annually. I started hearing a rattle a few weeks back that got progressively worse. Took it to a local mechanic. He said he would love the chance to replace the timing chain, because it would be a week's worth of work for his mechanics, but he said it would be in my best interest to drive the car til the engine dies, then just replace the whole engine. Said that there was no telling what other problems he might find with valves or whatever once he opened up the engine, so it wouldn't be in my best interest to fix it.

The car is comfortable to sit in. That's it on the good. It has had numerous problems over its six years in existence.

I purchased a 2004 Nissan Maxima. The car jerks when changing gears. I have been told I need new struts. And the thing that concerns me the most is that the car will rev up as if I am pushing down on the gas, when really I am not increasing my speed. This has happened when I was simply driving slowly through a parking lot.

I purchased this car, because I thought it would be safe and dependable. I am very disappointed in the performance of this car. It will cost me a great deal of money to have this car repaired.

1) Driver's door was making noises when braking, going over bumps or accelerating.

2) Engine consumed 1 quart of oil per 1500km

3) Timing chain tensioners went bad, causing the chain to rattle. $1200 fix.

4) Alternator went bad.

5) Front passenger side ball joint went bad, so lower control arm had been replaced.

6) Rust stain under drivers floor mat underneath. It's no doubt a manufacturer's defect, as it's common for all Maximas, Altimas and Infinitis.

7) Freon somehow escaped the system, so had to be refilled

8) AT has died completely at 206k.

9) Motor mounts gone bad twice.

10) Sunroof stopped working after every time you disconnect the battery.

11) Hand brake didn't work.

When everything is working, it's a beautiful place to be in, and driving is fun and enjoyable. The problem is I have never had everything working in this car. Once I fix a problem, something else will go bad.

I had read some reports on this site before buying a car, but I was sure that if you take a proper care of it, it will run fine. I was wrong. Almost every major problem I have had with that vehicle is a well known issue on the net.

$6k in repairs in just a year was too much for me, so I got rid of it. Spoke to many Nissan owners, since I was a member of an enthusiast club, and many of them had similar problems with never ending repairs.

Feels like when Nissan moved its manufacturing to the US, is a factor to all general quality issues.

I purchased my Nissan Maxima brand new in 2004 with 87 miles, and had no problems until the factory warranty was about to go on the car.

When it had about 67,000 miles on it, I had a serious jerking problem with the transmission, and so I was talking to a service guy at the Nissan dealership where I had my car serviced, and he told me not to tell the manager, but he had the 05 Nissan, and once he found out about the transmission problems, he turned his back in, and recommended that I do the same thing.

Since I'd had the car for 4 years, and only had 2 years remaining to pay for the car, I thought that if he could change the fluids, that it would get better. So I spent $1000.00, and nothing changed, and he said that they had changed out several, and that the fluids sets up and gets like syrup, and he said that myself and others should file a class action lawsuit.

Bad bad Nissan, and to think all I wanted was a Nissan, because in the past they were so dependable, but never again Nissan, you have lost a valued customer.
