Did compression check on motor, found to have no compression. Took top off motor and discovered a broken timing chain and gears. Dealer indicated it had evidently been over tightened at factory. Replaced these parts, car still would not start. Dealer did another compression check and 3 of 4 cylinders had no compression. Discovered that 10 of the 16 valves had been bent when the timing chain broke.
This was a $2700.00 repair. Luckily, we had bought an extended warranty because the factory warranty had run out 1,000 miles earlier.
The car handles well.
The car looks good.
Wish I had seen this forum earlier. My daughter has a 2002 Grand Am, and her timing chain broke as she was going down the road. Car quit, had to be towed, and now needs a whole new engine. To the tune of $6,000!
Contacted GM and they will gladly pay 1/2 of the bill. How big of them! Grrr...
GM has lost my business on this deal.
